Gay Budapest

Budapest,
Hungary

Budapest, Hungary.
Gay and Lesbian Hotels, Inns and Guest Houses - Reviews and Ratings. Gay and Lesbian Travel.

Budapest, “the Paris of the East”, is the capital of Hungary. Buda is the hilly and residential side and Pest is the flat and vibrant part of the city. It is a city of great architecture, music, food and people. Perhaps the best time to visit is from early April to middle of November. The city is considered the gay capital of Eastern Europe but you will not find any audience specific bars or clubs such as leather or bear specific. Everyone goes to the same places (age or preference doesn't matter) and all of the bars (except some baths) are in the center of Budapest's Pest side, in the 5th, 6th, 7th and 9th district.

Most gay and lesbian hotels and guesthouse accommodations are in the center of Budapest's Pest side although is there plenty of gay friendly hotels and guesthouses on both sides of the river. Budapest attracts many gay and lesbian visitors from all over Europe so it is recommended that you book early to ensure you get the accommodation you require.

Budapest is famous for its public bathhouses. They also play an important role in the city's gay life. A visit to a Budapest bathhouse, a tradition leftover from the Turkish occupancy of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, is a unique way to experience Hungarian culture first hand. The Kiraly Bath (art nouveau) and Gellert Bath (dating from 15th century but recently refurbished 2005) are more tradition. For fun, try the Sauna 69 and Magnum Spa and Gym.

Of course there is plenty of history to explore in this great European city. Buda Castle and dungeons, Hero’s Square, Parliament, the Royal Palace, the Chain Bridge, Matthias Church, and Fisherman’s Bastian to name a few.

Budapest's grand culinary tradition stretches back to the nineteenth century. Though there's no shortage of Hungarian cuisine on offer in the city - a meat- and spice-heavy style - there's plenty of other choices to tempt palates used to lighter flavors. Equally, there is no end to the inns and pubs dotted throughout the city serving every conceivable type and style of beer. The same goes for nightclubs, everything from jazz and rock to disco.

When it comes to shopping, new and old exist side by side in Budapest. Open-air markets selling farm produce stand side by side with mammoth shopping malls that set new standards in choice and quality. There's a no end to the range of traditional products on offer either, from folk embroidery to porcelain, goose feather duvets to Pick-brand salami.

So, if you’re planning a weekend break or a longer vacation that offers, fun, excitement, relaxation, history, culture, great dining and vibrant nightlight, Budapest has it all for the gay and lesbian traveler.
