Lisbon, Portugal.
Gay and Lesbian Hotels, Inns and Guest Houses - Reviews and Ratings. Gay and Lesbian Travel.
Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, is a legendary city with over 20 centuries of history. Like Istanbul, Rome and Seattle, Lisbon is built on seven hills. Its downtown, the Baixa, is located in the 18th century area around Rossio. East of the arcade Praça do Comercio are the medieval quarters of Alfama and Mouraria, crowned by the magnificent St. George's Castle.
Lisbon’s gay and lesbian hotels, guesthouses and resorts are limited but there are a number of gay friendly hotels, guesthouses and resorts offer a range of rates and amenities to meet most budgets and tastes of the gay and lesbian traveler.
Lisbon’s upbeat nightlife, balmy climate, lively outdoors atmosphere, sandy beaches (including a predominantly gay beach), great cultural attractions create a gay-friendly ambience that has turned the city into an increasingly popular gay destination.
A few tips from the locals: Instead of taking one of the tourist trams, take Line 28. It takes you by many of Lisbon's most famous sites. Eat out one night in a traditional Portuguese restaurant at the Bairro Alto, preferably one that has traditional fado music. Chiado, Bairro Alto and Principe Real are popular gay areas, with inviting restaurants, bars, bookstores and clubs.
Nearby Cascais is a pleasant summer resort, and the village of Sintra is a beautiful UNESCO site, 30 minutes by car or train from Lisbon. Both are worth a visit.
A number of Lisbon’s popular bars and clubs such as Lux, Kremlin and Paradise Garage attract a large gay crowd but you don’t have to go to strictly gay hangouts to meet Lisbon’s gay community. A number of cafes in the Chiado, Bairro Alto and Principe Real districts, the city’s gayborhoods, are popular meeting points for everyone and have a myriad of restaurants, bars, bookstores, antique shops and clubs. The atmosphere is relaxed and laid-back, and everyone is free to be and act themselves.
The beaches south of the city are also popular gay hangouts in the summer months, especially that of Meco, and one known as "Beach 19," for being the nineteenth stop of a toy train that runs by most beaches of the shore known as "Costa da Caparica".
So, whether you are looking for a get-away weekend or a longer vacation, Lisbon, Portugal has plenty to offer the gay and lesbian traveler.
