Gay Santorini

Santorini, Greece.
Gay and Lesbian Hotels, Inns and Guest Houses - Reviews and Ratings. Gay and Lesbian Travel.

Santorini Greece is one of the most popular destinations of Greece and known as the home of one of the most spectacular landscapes in the world. Every year, thousands of gay and lesbian travelers visit Santorini to discover the famous submerged caldera, the volcano’s crater, located in the middle of a 32 square miles basin of water. Around the basin, hanging on the cliff’s edge over 1,000 feet high, are the villages of Fira, Firostefani, Immerovigli and Oia; perhaps some of the most beautiful traditional villages of the Cyclades. The pure white Cycladic houses with blue painted windows contrast stunningly against the black volcanic rocks rising from the Aegean Sea.

Santorini has some of the most romantic gay and gay friendly hotels, guesthouses and villas on the Greek Islands. Prices and amenities offered range from modest to magnificent so there is plenty of choice for even the most discerning gay and lesbian traveler.

Santorini is what remains of several savage volcanic eruptions that reconfigured the islands over the last 3,500 years and brought about the destruction of the Minoan civilization on Crete and the mythical city of Atlantis. The last eruption took place in 1956 but the volcano remains active until today. Jules Verne made Santorini famous with its books "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea" and "The Mysterious Island.

The ferry from Piraerus to Santorini takes about 8 to 9 hours and stop at a couple other islands on the way, usually Paros, Naxos and Ios. There’s also a couple high-speed ferries that take half the time and cost twice as much. Making connections to other islands by boats can be tricky but usually there are daily boats to Paros, Naxos, Ios, and sometimes to Mykonos and Sifnos. There is an airport in Santorini with several flights a day to Mykonos and in the summer connections to Rhodes and Crete.

Ask any gay or lesbian traveler for their memories of Santorini and they will talk about the black sand beaches, the stunning views from the cliff top villages, the spectacular sunsets, the acres of vineyards, an evening cocktail overlooking the Aegean, dancing to the music of a ‘live’ Bouzouki band, eating al fresco into the early hours and simply relaxing and kicking back.

So, for a truly romantic destination, an island to make friends, share common experiences and to take a breath from the rigors of every day living, then the Greek Island of Santorini has it all for the gay and lesbian traveler. And to think that some lucky people live here year round!
