Gay Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki, Greece.
Gay and Lesbian Hotels, Inns and Guest Houses - Reviews and Ratings. Gay and Lesbian Travel.

Thessaloniki has given Greece some of its greatest musicians, artists, poets and thinkers. It has some of the most beautiful beaches and has some of the finest hotels and best restaurants in northern Greece. It’s a very different city from Athens but no less sophisticated and some even say culturally superior.

Thessaloniki has a limited number of gay and lesbian hotels, inns and guesthouses that market specifically to the gay and lesbian traveler. However, there are a number of gay friendly hotels, inns and guesthouses, from budget to deluxe, for the gay and lesbian to choose from.

The influence of the east is more pronounced, not just in the delicious food, but in the relaxed lifestyle. Large avenues, parks and squares lined with trees frame commercial streets with couture shop windows. Old taverns, "ouzeries" and restaurants sit side by side with deluxe hotels and luxury bars. Small family run taverns and basement pastry shops offer a delicious variety of famous Macedonian specialties. The Upper Town of Thessaloniki, known as Ano Poli, is filled with quaintly charming neighborhoods, that feature narrow streets and beautiful small gardens. This is quite a contrast to the lively city atmosphere that lies very near by.

Thessaloniki is second largest city in Greece. It has an almost college town feel, it’s a bit like Boston or Austin, only Greek. It has a very lively gay scene and the nightlife in Thessaloniki is exceptional. The bars, cafés and clubs play great music including the Greek Blues" - the Rebetica songs. The restaurants and ouzeries are among the best in Greece. The city is also the site of the renowned Thessaloniki Film Festival in October-November. The women of Thessaloniki, considered the most chic in Greece, support a high-fashion industry that rivals that of Athens so if you’re a shop-a-holic and like to shop for clothes, shoes and jewelry, this is your kind of place.

The main waterfront squares are Platia Elefterias and Platia Aristotelous, are trimmed with cafes and restaurants. The 15th century Lefkos Pyrgos, or White Tower is the symbol of the city and contains an art and history museum. From the top of the tower are great views of the city below. Another must-visit place is Moudiano, the meat market, in a restored old building full of energy, smells, and some of the most famous old ouzeries in Thessaloniki, some of them with live rembetika music.

There aren’t a large number of ancient ruins within the city but there are enough Roman and Byzantine sites to give the gay and lesbian traveler plenty to see. The ruins of Vergina that contains the tomb of Phillip, father of Alexander the Great and Pella, the birthplace of Alexander the Great are both worth seeing.

So, if you’re looking for relaxation, culture, history, art, city energy and great food,
Thessaloniki, Greece is a great place for the gay and lesbian traveler to visit.
