San Antonio, Texas, USA.
Gay and Lesbian Hotels, Inns and Guest Houses - Reviews and Ratings. Gay and Lesbian Travel.

San Antonio, Texas named for the Italian, Saint Anthony of Padua, is a vibrant city and the cultural gateway into the American Southwest. Over 20 million tourists visit San Antonio each year to enjoy its many famous attractions.

San Antonio has a few gay and lesbian hotels, resorts and guesthouses as well as several gay friendly hotels, resorts and guesthouses for the gay and lesbian traveler to choose from. If you're traveling on your own and want an alternative to the corporate hotels, book into one of the gay-friendly accommodations that offer more distinctive personal attention and historic charm. There are no gay hotels per se in San Antonio, but Arbor House Inn and The Inn on Broadway are gay-owned and welcome both gay and non-gay clientele. The latest small hotel property in downtown San Antonio is the Havana Riverwalk Inn, the other is the 1908 Ayres Inn.

San Antonio’s gay scene is thriving, which is surprising considering it is a seemingly conservative and military city. But some gay residents indicate a "don't ask, don't tell" attitude keeps its gay community on a lower profile than that found in Austin and Houston. That said, gays and lesbians living in San Antonio say the city is “comfortable” despite the lack of an identifiable gay neighborhood or a high-profile activist community. Gay and lesbian visitors, too, should feel pretty much at home here, whether traveling singly or together.

The River Walk, lined with numerous boutique shops, bars, and restaurants wends it way through the downtown area. It is also home to the Arneson River Theater, which transforms into an impressive festival of lights during the Christmas and New Year holiday period. During the summer the sounds of folklorico and flamenco music fills the air during the summer, particularly during celebrations such as the Fiesta Noche del Rio. Also based along the River Walk is the newly restored Aztec On The River, the only surviving exotic-themed movie palace in Texas. The historic Alamo, located nearby, is Texas' top tourist attraction. Other attractions include the SeaWorld San Antonio and Six Flags Fiesta Texas theme parks. San Antonio is also home to the first museum of modern art in Texas—the Marion Koogler McNay Art Museum.

Beyond taking in the sights and sounds of San Antonio, tourists can sample some of its world famous Tex-Mex cuisine at the many fine restaurants located throughout the city. San Antonio is the undisputed home of authentic Tex-Mex. Mexican restaurants are abundant in virtually all parts of town, and most — except for those in the Far North and some of the Uptown enclaves like Alamo Heights — are relatively inexpensive. Some outstanding examples of Tex-Mex eateries include Jacala, on West Avenue on the near Northwest side, Karam's, in the middle of the West Side, and Los Barrios, on the near North side of town.

So whether you’re visiting San Antonio, Texas on business, or for a weekend break or for longer vacation, there is plenty of history, culture, art, fun, excitement and great cuisine for the gay and lesbian traveler to enjoy.
