Northampton is located along the banks of the scenic Connecticut River in Western Massachusetts. The Northampton of today; where artists and writers, merchants and farmers, scholars and professionals live in unique cooperation began as a Puritan settlement purchased from the Nonotuck Indians in 1654. Northampton today is a popular destination for gay, lesbian and straight tourists, who come to enjoy the city's culture, shopping and restaurants. Since 1995 the city has been home to the biannual Paradise City Arts Festival, held at the Three County Fairgrounds on Memorial Day Weekend and Columbus Day Weekend. The Festival is ranked the #2 arts fair in America, and is a national juried showcase for contemporary craft and fine art.

Northampton remains a showplace for the arts, and was rated as the top "Small Arts Town" in the country. Northampton is also the home of the New Century Theatre founded by Sam Rush and Jack Neary founded the theater in 1991. Northampton is an open and tolerant community, and is home to a sizeable lesbian community. The town has ties to the controversial children's book, "Heather Has Two Mommies”

The many art galleries, museums, boutique shops, theaters, clubs and eclectic restaurants and cafés have established Northampton as the place in Western Massachusetts for dining and entertainment, earning it’s name as “Number One Best Small Arts Town in America” by author John Villani and one of the “Top 25 Arts Destinations” in the nation by AmericanStyle magazine.

Northampton is home to Smith College and is located in the heart of a lively college community that also includes the University of Massachusetts, Amherst College, Hampshire College, and Mount Holyoke College. The colleges are host to a wide array of educational, cultural, arts, theater, and music events as well as museums. The campus offers beautiful gardens, walks around Paradise Pond, the Lyman Conservatory, and the Smith College Museum of Art.

No wonder the Boston Globe says this about Northampton, “This small city offers more restaurants and shops, certainly more galleries, theaters and performance venues than most urban centers dozens of times its size. Add two rivers, mountain views, landscaped parks and meadow walks, and you begin to see why people call it paradise.”
