Gay San Jose

San Jose,
Costa Rica

San Jose, Costa Rica.
Gay and Lesbian Hotels, Inns and Guest Houses - Reviews and Ratings. Gay and Lesbian Travel.

Costa Rica, which likes to call itself the Switzerland of Central America, is a mountainous country with a population of 3.5 million people. It is nestled between Panama on the South and Nicaragua on the North. San José, the country's most populous city and capital, has a population of over one million people, including 250,000 North American nationals and sits at an altitude of 4,000 feet with a perpetually spring-like climate. At the heart of the historic center stand several beautiful old buildings including the National Theater, Plaza de la Cultura, Parque Central, the Cathedral and Gold Museum, which are centered in a four block area with a long pedestrian-only shopping walkway bisecting the middle of downtown. As the cultural heart of the nation, San José is home to several theater groups, excellent museums, parks, a national symphony, cinemas and universities. It is also host to nightclubs, casinos, discos and fine restaurants.

As far as accommodation goes. San Jose offers everything from gay friendly hostels for back-packers, to the finest gay friendly ‘5 star’ hotels, inns and guesthouses for the upscale gay and lesbian traveler. Rates and amenities offered provide plenty of choice depending on individual budgets and tastes.

Near-perfect weather is a big attraction to visitors as well as expatriates who call the Central Valley home. The temperature is fairly consistent between 70 and 75°F. The rainy season, when late afternoons and evenings bring showers, lasts from May to October.

Places to visit around San José include El Pueblo a mix of over 50 bars, clubs, restaurants, art galleries and shops and Calle de la Amargura in San Pedro near the University of Costa Rica, which has a wide selection of bars, restaurants and discos. Intricate woodworks, silver & gold, the Farmer’s Markets, the Mercado Central, handmade Guzman Guitars are just some of the local goods and products you'll find when shopping in San Jose.

The gay scene in Costa Rica is beginning to blossom. In San José, gay and lesbian travelers can choose between one of a dozen downtown bars and clubs, four saunas, an internet café, and more than a handful of gay friendly restaurants, hotels and other businesses. There's a small gay area, just south of Central Park, that caters to local and out of town visitors. It's host to four gay venues; the Avispa, Las Cucharrones, Margot and the Moulin Rouge.

It’s advisable to use a taxis even for extremely short distances. Use common sense when moving around the city. Carry only as much cash as required and leave credit cards in a safe at your hotel. As there are no street addresses in San Jose, or for that matter, in Costa Rica, getting around is challenging. Most directions are given by referring to landmarks but ask more than one person for directions as even the locals get confused and don’t want to admit it.

Unless you’re really adventurous, don’t hire a car for getting around the city. Once you’ve arrived at San Jose International Airport, get an official orange airport cab into down town, which takes about 30 minutes. The rates are fixed, depending upon where you want to go, and you, or the driver, will pre-pay at an official booth. Even though the international airport near Liberia has greatly expanded its capacity in the last year, San Jose, via the Juan Santamaria Airport is still where most people arrive.

So if you’re a gay or lesbian traveler looking for culture, art, great food and architecture, San Jose, Costa Rica has much to offer.
