Gay Athens

Athens, Greece.
Gay and Lesbian Hotels, Inns and Guest Houses - Reviews and Ratings. Gay and Lesbian Travel.

Athens, Greece is a city of ancient and modern history, a city worshipped by gods and people, and a city that is magical, vibrant and exciting. Athens is the capital of Greece and acknowledged as the birthplace of Western civilization. It is the city where democracy was born as well as most of the philosophers, astronomers, writers, builders and artists of ancient times. Who hasn't heard of the Acropolis of Athens, nominated to be one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World? The Holy Rock of Acropolis dates back to the 5th BC, the famous Golden Age of Periklis. Athens is located just a short distance from the port of Piraeus, the central commercial port of the city.

There is no gay-specific hotels in Athens. Hotels in the fashionable Kolonaki neighborhood are gay-friendly so there is plenty of choice based in individual budgets and tastes. Always check ahead to confirm current rates, as they are certain to be significantly higher during the summer season. So wherever you stay, post a review of your accommodation experience for the benefit of other gay and lesbian travelers.

Even though Athen’s gay scene is not as organized or "out" as in other Western nations (Greece only recently had its first pride parade), you will find animated gay venues just about any night of the week here. The same goes for restaurants. Even though there aren't many gay-specific restaurants in Athens, there are restaurants and cafés that are gay friendly, and several have a strong gay following.

Athens has a fairly wide range of nightlife options with both music bars and dance clubs. For a city of nearly five million inhabitants though, the gay nightclub scene is relatively subdued during the week, with many gays and lesbians opting for straight venues. The weekends are when these places really get rolling, usually after midnight. There are few lesbian-only venues, though we note which gay clubs are popular with women. One word of warning: bars and clubs are very, very smoky!

The 2004 Olympic Games in Athens did wonders for the city. Athens is no longer the famously dirty and congested metropolis it once was. The new airport and city metro, as well as new freeways and highways and street trolleys, have brought Greece firmly up-to-date. Many visitors think that a few days in Athens en route to or from one of the Greek islands as an unavoidable nuisance, but, in spite of the summer smog, heat and noise, the city offers plenty of charm, history and sites that make a couple nights here a satisfying adjunct to a visit to Greece.

So, if you’re looking for a fun city with excitement, art, culture, history, sites, sounds, food and wine so distinct to the destination, then Athens, Greece offers it all for the gay and lesbian traveler.
