Gay Prague

Prague,
Czech Republic

Prague, Czech Republic.
Gay and Lesbian Hotels, Inns and Guest Houses - Reviews and Ratings. Gay and Lesbian Travel.

Who would have believed that with the fall of communism back in 1989, the Czech Republic and in particular, Prague would rise like a phoenix. Today, Prague, with its spires and medieval architecture, has become one of Europe’s most visited gay and lesbian tourist destinations. What is so appealing is the way the Czechs have rejuvenated the ancient city without loosing its unique charm. Traditional bars and restaurants have been augmented with fine dining restaurants, chic cocktail bars and cafes.

Prague offers not end of quality accommodation ranging from luxury hotels and boutique guesthouses to smaller inns and apartments. Prices and amenities offered range from budget to deluxe so there is plenty of choice for the gay and lesbian traveler.

There is so much to do and see in Prague that a weekend visit will seem painfully short. There’s the 1100 year old Prague Castle, the largest ancient castle in the world, perched on Hradcany Hill overlooking the city and of course the famous cobbled Charles Bridge, lined with statues of the saints, linking the Old Town to the Little Quarter, the city’s second medieval town.

Once in the Old town, get lost in the labyrinthine cobbled streets and explore the countless old churches and courtyards. But if shopping is your thing, there are plenty of bargains to be picked up too. Then there is the Petrin Tower, the 19th century copy of the Eiffel Town, which affords some of the best views of the city. After all this sightseeing, what better way to take a rest than in one of the famous Prague bars where you can tuck into meat and dumplings washed down by a cold glass of Pilsner beer.

Prague’s vibrant gay scene is mainly centered around the Vinohrady district, which is close to the city center. New gay bars and clubs like Angels, open each year adding to the 25 or so already established, such as Drake’s, Saints and Termix. Just be aware that the Czech boys in any of the strip joints are only interested in money, not personality. The lesbian scene is limited to just a couple of bars, Street Café and Jampa Dampa, neither of which is totally exclusive. All the gay bars welcome women and some also have specific women’s nights.

Prague is a year round destination but the best time is April to June and September to October. The summer months can be rather hot. If you can bear the freezing temperatures, January and February are particularly inviting, when the city is covered in a blanket of snow and the streets are quiet and peaceful, and there are no lines for the major tourist sites, museums and art galleries.

Getting to Prague is also relatively painless, once you’re in the European Union that is. There are plenty of flights and great rail links to and from most European destinations. Flight and rail costs are also comparatively inexpensive, at least in European currency terms.

Getting around Prague couldn’t be simpler. The city has one of the best public transportation systems in Europe. During the major tourist months, traffic can be a nightmare so hiring a car or taking a cab really doesn’t work. The metro, trams and buses are used by two-thirds of Prague's population and cover the majority of the city and outskirts. The metro makes getting around town a breeze since it enables you to cover long distances in a matter of minutes. If you can't continue to your destination on foot, you'll be able to catch a tram or bus from near the subway station.
If you're going to be staying in Prague for a few days, you may want to buy a tourist pass that will enable you to use any type of mass transit as many times as you want within the time period for which your pass is valid.
