Gay Copenhagen

Copenhagen, Denmark.
Gay and Lesbian Hotels, Inns and Guest Houses - Reviews and Ratings. Gay and Lesbian Travel.

Denmark has been a pioneer of GLBT rights for over 60 years. The National Association for Gays and Lesbians (LBL) was founded in 1948 and is the first of its kind. In 1989, Denmark was the first country in the world to recognize same sex marriage and in 1999, married gays were able to adopt the infants of their partners, a major step towards the acceptance of gay parents.

Copenhagen, Denmark’s capital, is a compact city and easy to get around. Everything is pretty much within walking distance, and this is particularly true of Copenhagen's gay scene. Centered in the 'Soho' like area of the old city, Copenhagen’s gay scene seems geographically designed to provide virtually the entire evening's fun and entertainment within one square mile. Denmark's capital has long had a tolerant and relaxed attitude towards both gay Danes and gay and lesbian travelers. The first gay bar, Centralhjørnet, opened over 80 year ago, and is still going strong, along with a number of newer cafés & bars. It even boasts its own radio station, Radio Rosa.

Copenhagen has a great selection of gay specific and gay-friendly hotels, inns, guesthouses and bed and breakfast accommodations for the gay and lesbian traveler to choose from. There is no shortage of top quality luxury hotels in Copenhagen, but if you're looking for a lower-key option then head for one of Copenhagen's gay-only bed and breakfasts, such as Carsten's Guest House, Downtown, Windsor and Copenhagen Rainbow. The Amagerhus B&B, although close to the airport, is still convenient to Copenhagen’s city centre. What you can be sure of is that virtually all hotels, bed and breakfast accommodations, guesthouses, apartments, campsites and hostels all welcome gays and heterosexuals alike.

Dining in Copenhagen is quite an experience. Gay and lesbian travelers who enjoy excellent cuisine can look forward to enjoying everything from marinated reindeer to freshly caught lobster, red hot Thai curries to traditional 'frikadeller' (Danish meat balls), sushi to smørrebrød, Denmark’s signature fresh open sandwiches. In the last few years a mouthwatering array of inventive, modern and stylish new restaurants has opened in the city, many of them with French, fusion or modern Italian influence, transforming Copenhagen into a major gourmet destination.

With nearly 100 years of gay tolerance, Copenhagen embraces the gay lifestyle with open, non-judgmental arms. On the last Sunday in May, the annual torchlight procession takes place in memory of those who have died of AIDS. June sees the St. Hans Midsummer Bonfire and beach party on the island of Amager, organized by LBL, the National Gay and Lesbian Organization. The Queer Festival brings together internationally known performers, musicians, djs, activists, drag kings and queens in a celebration that challenges the traditional lines between the sexes. Then there's the Annual Gay Pride Parade in August. Known in Copenhagen as 'Copenhagen Pride', thousands of spectators line the parade route, as around a thousand gays and lesbians strut their stuff through the capital, jamming the traffic with floats, rainbow flags "dykes on bikes, screaming queens and leather guys". Across the Øresund Bridge in Malmö, Sweden, the Rainbow Festival takes place every year in October. Also that month the 9 day Copenhagen Gay and Lesbian film festival (the oldest gay film festival in the world) takes place, showcasing contemporary gay and lesbian films from all over the world. On December 1st - International AIDS day, various events take place throughout the city.

Nightlife in Copenhagen is anything but boring, tame or dull. The list of gay bars, clubs and restaurants is impressive and new venues are added each year. Copenhagen has always been a late starter when it comes to clubbing and bars, and it's not r
