Dunedin, New Zealand
Gay and Lesbian Hotels, Inns and Guest Houses - Reviews and Ratings. Gay and Lesbian Travel.

Dunedin, New Zealand’s oldest city, is a university city of Scottish heritage. It combines cultural riches, fine architecture, and world-famous wildlife reserves on the Otago Peninsula. Dunedin is the main centre of Otago, a region recognized for its spectacular scenery. The sheer physical beauty of Dunedin, dramatic bush-covered hills and valleys at the head of a long natural harbour, attracted Maori settlers to the site over four centuries ago.

Dunedin has an active gay and lesbian community and has a range of accommodation to suit all budgets and tastes for the gay and lesbian traveler. Ranging from gay and lesbian owned and gay friendly hostels, boutique gay bed and breakfast and guesthouses, luxury lodges and inns, Dunedin's gay and lesbian accommodation is interesting and diverse.

From small settlement beginnings, Dunedin has become the centre for the nation's wealth. After years of declining population, the city has re-invented itself as a 'heritage city' with its main streets refurbished in Victorian style. The cityscape glitters with gems of Victorian and Edwardian architecture - the legacy of the city's gold-rush affluence - many including First Church and Larnach Castle designed by one of New Zealand's most eminent architects R A Lawson. Other prominent buildings include Olveston and the magnificent Dunedin Railway Station. Other not-to-be missed attractions include Baldwin Street, the world's steepest street; the famous Captain Cook Tavern; and the local Speight's brewery. And what visitor wouldn’t enjoy a tour of the Cadbury chocolate factory?

The climate of Dunedin in general is temperate with warm summers and cool winters. However the city does have a large number of microclimates and the weather conditions often vary between suburbs due to the city's topographical layout and its proximity to the ocean.

Scattered throughout the city are a range of public and private gardens and parks, some formal and others more natural in design and layout. The Botanic Garden is famous for the Rhododendron Dell, its exotic beauty celebrated every year in the third week of October with the Rhododendron Festival

For those seeking a little cultural, Dunedin’s museums and galleries offer plenty of variety. The Otago Museum and Discovery World is renowned for its Maori and Pacific Island collections and its natural history displays. The Otago Settlers Museum features the social history of Otago, telling stories of the people who have made Dunedin and Otago their home. The Dunedin Public Art Gallery is acknowledged for its collections of 16th to 19th century British and European water colors and oils, while its ongoing program of international and national exhibitions is worthy of further investigation.

Getting to Dunedin couldn’t be easier. Dunedin International Airport is primarily a domestic terminal, with regular flights to and from Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington, Rotorua, Palmerston North, and seasonal flights to and from Queenstown, Wanaka, and Fiordland, but it also has regular international flights arriving from and departing to Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, and Coolangatta.

One final point, with 14 gay and lesbian tourism regions to choose from throughout country, New Zealand is becoming a boutique destination for the gay man, women, lesbian, transgender and bisexual traveler.

So, if you’re looking for a destination offering history, culture, art, fine cuisine and a truly unique New Zealand experience, then Dunedin has it all for the gay and lesbian traveler.
