Gay and Lesbian Hotels, Inns and Guest Houses - Reviews and Ratings. Gay and Lesbian Travel

The Bay of Islands is a premier New Zealand holiday destination. This stunningly beautiful stretch of sand and rock coastline circles a sea sprinkled with 144 islands and secluded coves. Wherever you are in the Bay of Islands, it's impossible to escape the lure of the sea. Opening out to the South Pacific, the Bay of Islands features innumerable coves and inlets just waiting to be discovered and the Bay has an abundance of marine life, including the big marlin, whales, penguins, dolphins, gannets and many other species.

The Bay of Islands is just 146 miles (237 kms) north of New Zealand's major international airport city on the North Island, Auckland, or a three hours drive. Not only is it a romantic and idyllic New Zealand holiday destination, but the Bay of Islands is, in fact, the cradle of New Zealand nationhood with historic Waitangi within its precincts. In 1840 Maori tribal leaders and the English colonisers forged a treaty which remains a watershed document for uniting New Zealand's various peoples into one common nation.

The Bay of Islands was discovered and named by the English explorer, Captain James Cook, in 1769. It was here that English settlers first set up home in the Land of the Long White Cloud. Today, the Bay of Islands has an abundance of different kinds of experiences to connect with the people and culture, ocean and land.

Paihia is the main town of the Bay of Islands: a jumping-off point for cruises across the bay and to its many islands, and a convenient place for lodging and dining. The town lies 15 miles (23 km) south-east of Kerikeri. Waitangi is immediately to the north and Russell which is on the opposite shore can be reached by passenger ferry, and by car ferry from nearby Opua.

There are a number of gay owned and gay friendly hotels, motels, guesthouses and B&B’s not only in Paihia but also in Russell and in Keriker to the north-west. Most of the Bay of Islands tour operators pick up those who book with them from hotels and motels in any of these towns. As with any holiday destination, it is also worth making reservations in advance, particularly during the high New Zealand summer season, November through April.

The warm waters of the tropical South Pacific that flow westward along the equator influence the Bay of Islands weather. When the current turns south, it produces a semi-tropical maritime climate enjoyed by the Bay of Islands. The tempered climate means that the summer months, November to April, don’t get too hot. The spring and fall are mild and the bay area is often referred to as "winterless".

As with most vacation destinations in New Zealand, the Bay of Islands abounds with a variety of gourmet restaurants and country cafés offering a full range of culinary delights to tempt the most discerning pallet. And of course, to compliment the great choices of food, there is plenty of excellent New Zealand wines to complete a perfect supper or al fresco lunch.

Air New Zealand Link operates daily flight from Auckland airport to Kerikeri airport. The flight time is approximately 45 minutes. If you prefer to travel by coach, Northliner operate a daily luxury express coach service from downtown Auckland to the Bay of Islands. To get here by car, the Bay of Islands is only three and half hour drive from Auckland via the East Coast Highway or five hours if you travel via the mighty Waipoua forest, the largest Kauri forest in New Zealand.

So, for a truly unique vacation, Paihia, Bay of Islands on the North Island of New Zealand has much to offer the adventurous gay and lesbian traveler.
