Greymouth, South Island, New Zealand.
Gay and Lesbian Hotels, Inns and Guest Houses - Reviews and Ratings. Gay and Lesbian Travel

Greymouth, South Island, New Zealand, is very much a town created around the 1860's gold rush and the ensuing development of road and rail links. Greymouth is the largest town on the West Coast, rich in history, and being the site of a Maori pa (village) steeped in Maori heritage. Although only Greymouth is a small town, it is the main centre along the West Coast and provides a good base for gay and lesbian travelers to explore the region. Rail travel is very much a part of the Greymouth, and the town is the terminus for the famous TranzAlpine rail journey. This spectacular journey across the Southern Alps from Christchurch is considered one of the world’s great rail journeys.

The people of the West Coast have a "live and let live" attitude to life, and are the most accepting people in the South Island, if not the whole country. Greymouth has a small gay and lesbian community and a great range of gay and gay friendly accommodations to suit all budgets and tastes. Gay and lesbian travelers can choose from gay owned and gay-friendly hotels, bed and breakfast, guesthouses, lodges and inns. These are complimented by a number of fine restaurants, cafés and bars as well as shops ranging from small, specialist shops to national chain stores.

Greymouth offers a range of activities only minutes from the town centre. These include the art gallery, Monteith’s Brewing Company and the History House. Greymouth’s heritage is vividly brought to life at the local history museum and in the nearby replica gold-mining settlement of Shantytown.

Fanning out from Greymouth, there is much to explore. North of the town, Paparoa National Park protects a superb stretch of native forest and the renowned Pancake Rocks and blowholes of Punakaiki. Karamea is the most northerly of the settlements and the last stop on a road to nowhere. It is the gateway to the vast wilderness of the Kahurangi National Park, whose limestone caves and arches are legendary. To the south, Westport is more of a town renowned for its fur seals, which come ashore to breed on Cape Foulwind.

The gold rush town of Hokitika lies on an exposed stretch of coast with a wave-pounded beach and is famous for its range of crafts and artifacts made of local jade or greenstone. In March each year, the town hosts the one of a kind Wild Foods Festival.

And of course there are the Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers, the West Coast’s major attractions. The twin villages offer an excellent choice of gay-friendly hotels, guesthouses and bed and breakfast accommodation, as well as a great range of glacier excursions, which include guided walks, heli-hikes and scenic flights. The idyllic Lake Matheson with Mt Cook and Mt Tasman reflected in its calm water is a definite “must see”. Nearby Okarito’s lagoon and beach is home to a white heron colony, while the coastal rainforests to the south are New Zealand’s most spectacular and protected as a World Heritage Site.

So, for gay and lesbian travelers looking for a true Kiwi experience, Greymouth, South Island, New Zealand has plenty to offer.
