Gay Fox Glacier

Fox Glacier, South Island
New Zealand

Fox Glacier, South Island, New Zealand.
Gay and Lesbian Hotels, Inns and Guest Houses - Reviews and Ratings. Gay and Lesbian Travel.

South of the Franz Josef Glacier on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island lies the larger of the two Westland glaciers, the Fox Glacier. Being the second glacier to be reached on the road from Greymouth, the Fox Glacier is often misses by visitors from the north who have time to visit only one of the West Coast glaciers. As a result, the Fox Glacier area is quieter and arguably less commercial than its smaller brother. While some find the Franz Josef Glacier a challenge to be conquered, the Fox Glacier is more placid and contemplation. But it has its own range of activities and attractions to seduce the Westland visitor.

Fox Glacier has a small but active gay and lesbian community and has a range of gay and gay-friendly accommodations to suit all budgets and tastes for the gay and lesbian traveler. These ranging from gay owned and gay-friendly hotels, bed and breakfasts, guesthouses, lodges and inns.

The Fox Glacier is named after the 19th Century New Zealand Prime Minister, Sir William Fox. It offers a range of activities such as snow walks and aerial flights similar to that of Franz Josef. Additionally, during the winter months (July to November), it offers downhill and cross-country skiing.

From the Fox Glacier, gay and lesbian travelers touring the South Island can continue south through the town of Haast to the fork in the road at Wanaka, and from there choose to continue on State Highway 6 toward Christchurch, with a possible detour to Mt Cook, or down Route 89 to Queenstown. When you arrive at Fox Glacier you immediately feel relaxed in its intimate, village atmosphere. It has stunning views across surrounding farmland and breathtaking views of New Zealand’s highest peaks Aoraki (Mt Cook) and Mt Tasman.

Complementing the charm of this delightful country village are nine licensed restaurants and cafes offering a wide selection of delicious food. The Fox Glacier General Store and Fox Glacier Motors also offer passing travelers a good variety of food and other necessities.

A ‘must do’ at Fox Glacier is a visit to Lake Matheson, a five minute drive west of the township. This famous reflective lake is a photographers dream, as its crystal waters create a mirror image of New Zealand’s highest peaks, Aoraki (Mt Cook) and Mt Tasman. 20 minutes drive on from Lake Matheson is the historic gold mining settlement of Gillespies Beach. There are several walks to enjoy here, the most popular being a four hour return trip to a colony of fur seals.

There are also a number of helicopter companies in town offering scenic flights over the glaciers and surrounding mountains. It is advisable to book ahead as they can be relatively busy when the weather is fine. If an adrenaline rush is what you are after, jump out of an airplane with Skydive NZ.

So, for the gay and lesbian traveler touring New Zealand’s South Island, a stay in the Fox Glacier area has plenty to offer and enjoy.
