Gay Taupo

Taupo, North Island
New Zealand

Taupo, North Island, New Zealand.
Gay and Lesbian Hotels, Inns and Guest Houses - Reviews and Ratings. Gay and Lesbian Travel.

Imagine the largest crystal clear freshwater lake in New Zealand, surrounded by stunning volcanoes, bush clad mountains and a spectacular landscape and you’ve discovered Lake Taupo. Located in the very heart of the North Island, the lake has some of the best trout fishing in the world that has international anglers flocking to this area. In contrast, the mighty mountain peaks surrounding Lake Taupo attracts skiers and adventurers alike to experience the pristine environment.

Taupo has a great range of gay and ‘gay friendly’ luxury lodges, hotels, motels and boutique guesthouses to meet the needs and budget of discerning gay and lesbian travelers.

Taupo township is a thriving bustling community and a popular holiday destination for New Zealanders and international visitors alike. The town has more of a village feel and the streets are lined with cafés and quality shops. At night the bars, restaurants and cafés come alive and al fresco lakeside dining is a popular feature of warm summer evenings.

In Taupo itself, and at the little village of Tokaanu near Turangi, there are hot mineral springs that have been soothing weary souls for centuries. Lake Taupo is a great vacation destination in both summer and winter. During the summer, the area becomes a huge playground for fishing, sailing and other water sports. You can catch rainbow or brown trout or go fly-fishing with a local guide up one of the many rivers in the area. Or hire a boat or take a scheduled cruise and explore Lake Taupo. A jet boat or riverboat cruise to the Huka Falls is a must and watch as over 200,000 litres of water fall over the cliff face every second.

And don’t forget the hot springs and geothermal wonders located all around the region. The ‘Craters of the Moon’ walk around an area of active thermal area with mud pools, craters and steam is truly stunning. Just a few minutes north of the Lake at Wairakei you'll find geothermal fields, boiling mud pools and steaming geysers. This is the perfect place to pamper yourself with a relaxing hot soak in the thermal baths at the Wairakei Geothermal Visitor Centre.

Not to be missed is the Prawn Park Hatchery, the world’s only geothermal heated prawn farm. The hatchery and it’s famous restaurant serves plates of thermal cooked prawns and the prawn burgers will blow you away.

One other adventure is to explore Orakei Korako Geyserland, 25 minutes north of Taupo, North Island, a valley of geysers, hot springs, mud volcanoes and silica terraces.

So, for the adventurous gay and lesbian traveler, Taupo, North Island, New Zealand has much to offer.
