Mangaweka, North Island

Mangaweka, North Island, New Zealand.
Gay and Lesbian Hotels, Inns and Guest Houses - Reviews and Ratings. Gay and Lesbian Travel

The small town of Mangaweka, population 250’ish, sits on State Highway One (SH1), between Taihape to the north and Hunterville to the south in the North Island of New Zealand. It is just 15 minutes south of Taihape, an hour south of the Mt Rupehu Ski Fields and an hours drive from Palmerston North and Wanganui.

Specific gay or lesbian accommodation is non-existent but there is a good range of affordable gay-friendly guesthouses and B&B’s to choose from.

Mangaweka’s is a great place to visit right in the middle of no where. The historic main street is home to a growing artists’ community and flourishing art galleries, and hosts the controversial annual "Fakes & Forgeries Art Exhibition and Festival" in October and November. Look for the yellow church building that houses the Mangaweka Gallery. Then there is the quirky cafe in an elevated DC-3 aircraft, a true one of a kind and a great pub serving great good.

Mangaweka lies on the banks of the Rangitikei River. This river provides a great number of fun activities to keep you busy. Water-based activities include rafting, kayaking, jet boating and swimming. For the thrill seekers, there are specialist adventure companies that organize 1 hour to 4 day kayaking and rafting packages. The upper Rangitikei gorges provide the most exciting Grade 5 whitewater adventure in the North Island.

Trout fishing in the river is also good, and this can be a lovely, relaxing way to spend a day. The enormous Papa cliffs that follow the Rangitikei River canyon provides the setting for the southern hemisphere's highest flying fox and bungy jump.

Other major features close to the town include one of the country's biggest railway viaducts, Makohine Viaduct and there are some great walking, hiking and horse trekking along the former North Island Main Trunk railway line and tunnels. Scenes for the Lord of the Rings were filmed in the area, and the local scenery is stunning.

Mangaweka, North Island, New Zealand is a great place for gay and lesbian travelers to lay their head for a day or two to relax and explore the area, or as a restful stop off on the way to or from the Volcanoes ski fields.
