Romantic Russell. The Bay of Islands is world renowned for its beauty and Russell is the perfect base for getting out on the bay. The old charm, history, modern facilities and easy access to many attractions make Russell the perfect place for a romantic stay or as a base to explore the upper North Island.

Russell has a wide range of gay friendly accommodation options to meet the needs and price range of the gay and lesbian traveler. Whether it's a tent in the camping ground or a suite at a luxury lodge, or a comfortable bed and breakfast, a bed at a backpackers or a holiday home to rent, you can be sure you'll find something to suit your needs.

Russell was the first capital and first seaport of New Zealand and one of the first European settlements. The town is rich in history with a variety of shops and services that do not spoil the old charm. If you’re a history buff, you can spend hours in the museum tracing the town’s history from the first European settlers to its whaling and marine heritage. Even the headstones at Christ’s Church, New Zealand's first church, have a story to tell.

Whatever you want to eat, fresh seafood, New Zealand lamb, Northland organic produce, a simple sandwich or some fresh baked bread for a picnic, will find something to delight you in Russell. Choices ranging from café or bistro dining to gourmet restaurants and fine waterfront dining. There’s even a pizza restaurant with take out or delivery service. You can also dine and sample the wine at Omata Estate, a local vineyard with commanding hill top views. For oyster lovers, locally farmed oysters can be purchased direct from the oyster farm at nearby Orongo Bay.

Bars range from the famous Duke of Marlborough hotel that also hosts summer jazz events, to the Bay of Island Swordfish club.

Although the town is situated on a peninsula, getting to Russell is easy. It is only three and a half hours drive from Auckland and forms part of the Twin Coast Discovery route. Or you can take one of the many ferry services that leave the Russell wharf throughout the year for the tourist town of Paihia.

Other attractions that leave from Russell’s wharf include the ‘Excitor’ to the hole in the rock, R. Tucker-Thomson’s sailing ship, fishing charters and dolphin encounter cruisers. From Russell you can also visit glowworm caves, thermal springs, world famous toilets, arts and crafts trails and even magnificent kauri trees in the Ngaiotonga forest.

So, for a truly New Zealand experience, Russell on the North Island, has plenty to offer the gay and lesbian traveler.
