Gay Hobart

Hobart, Tasmania
Australia

Hobart, Tasmania, Australia.
Gay and Lesbian Hotels, Inns and Guest Houses - Reviews and Ratings. Gay and Lesbian Travel.

It’s a pretty sure bet that any visit to Tasmania will begin in it’s harbor capital, Hobart, located in the south-east of the state at the foot of majestic Mount Wellington. Hobart is Australia’s smallest and most historic capital with a provocative mix of historic and contemporary art and culture. Hobart is also the birthplace of Errol Flynn, who knew!

Hobart, Tasmania is an extremely open-minded part of Australia and it is very gay tolerant. The government abolished discrimination against same sex relationships in 1997. As a result, the gay scene is still emerging but it is alive and flourishing. Specific gay accommodation is limited but there is plenty of gay friendly hotels, guesthouses and apartments for gay and lesbian travelers to choose from.

Hobart is a picturesque city. It has stunning views, quaint colonial architecture, a bustling art scene and a well-preserved city center. The suburbs of Battery Point and Sandy Bay with their delicately decorated Victorian and Regency cottages overlook the harbor with stunning views. But it is in the restored harbor-side district of Salamanca, formerly a warehouse district dating back to the 1830’s, that gay and lesbian travelers will find a busy, trendy place packed with art shops, bars and street cafés and the city's art gallery. It is also in Salamanca that you are likely to find the city's young lesbian, gay and gay-friendly residents relaxing on a warm afternoon.

The Salamanca Market on Saturdays is well worth visiting. It's also a city of fun, festivals and entertainment, from classical to contemporary, from pub bands to opera. The River Derwent has shaped the city, which becomes evident when you hop on a river cruise or drive to the summit of Mount Wellington or Mt Nelson for spectacular views. River cruises offer morning tea, afternoon tea, lunch and dinner. Apart from the leisure yachts, the harbour is also a shelter for Antarctic supply vessels, catamarans, ocean racers, cray fishing boats, square-riggers, dinghies and kayaks. The docks are at their busiest in December and January because of the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race and Hobart Summer Festival.

So, if you’re looking for a city of history, culture, music, art, excellent restaurants and cafés and a vibrant gay scene, then Hobart, Tasmania has plenty to offer the gay and lesbian traveler.
