Gay Tongariro National Park

Tongariro National Park, South Island
New Zealand

Tongariro National Park, North Island, New Zealand.
Gay and Lesbian Hotels, Inns and Guest Houses - Reviews and Ratings. Gay and Lesbian Travel.

Established in 1887, Tongariro was the first national park in New Zealand and the fourth in the world. Tongariro National Park is located in the central North Island of New Zealand. The nearest towns are Turangi, National Park Village and Ohakune.

It is also a dual World Heritage area, a status that recognises the park's important Maori cultural and spiritual associations, as well as its outstanding volcanic beauty.

Although there is no gay specific accommodation in the area, there is a good choice of gay friendly accommodations, hotels and guesthouses in the area for the gay and lesbian traveler to choose from.

It is a place of extremes and surprises, a place to explore and a place to remember. From herb fields to forests, from tranquil lakes to desert-like plateau and active volcanoes, Tongariro has them all. Discovering the secrets of the volcanic wilderness and experiencing where adventure happens, National Park Village is naturally an ideal base for summer and winter explorers.

National Park Village borders the World Heritage Tongariro National Park (Tongariro Crossing) to the east and the Whanganui National Park, to the West. National Park Village is located near the base of Mt Ruapehu, on the volcanic plateau. The village has great views of Mt Tongariro, Mt Ngauruhoe (Mt Doom in the ‘Lord of the Rings’) and Mt Ruapehu.

The main activities are hiking and climbing in summer, and skiing and snowboarding in winter. There is also opportunity for hunting, game fishing, mountain biking, horse riding, rafting and scenic flights.

In the summer you will find every thing you need to enjoy the Tongariro and Whanganui National Park from hiking, biking and kayaking. National Park Village has Tongariro Crossing accommodation from bed and breakfast, motel, apartments and budget backpackers - to treking supplies and hire. The Tongariro Crossing Transport leaves daily (weather permitting) from your accommodation for the Tongariro Crossing, known as the best one-day trek in New Zealand.

In the winter National Park Village is the ideal base to ski Whakapapa and Turoa ski fields on Mt Ruapehu, where you can hire your ski gear and purchase your mountain pass.

Backcountry huts, located throughout the park, are linked by excellent track systems. One of the best one day treks in the country is the traverse of Mount Tongariro (known as the Tongariro Alpine Crossing). It can be done as part of the longer Northern Circuit, one of New Zealand's Great Walks. There are also many easy, short walks: to spectacular waterfall and fascinating volcanic features and through a variety of landscapes from open herbfields to magnificent podocarp forest. The Rimu Track nature walk at Ohakune and the Alpine Walk at Whakapapa are both wheelchair accessible. Walks brochures are available from the Whakapapa Visitor Centre and other local visitor centres.

So, for the lovers of the great outdoors and all the natural beauty that New Zealand has to offer, the Tongariro National Park on the North Island has much to offer the gay and lesbian traveler.
