Gay Picton

Picton, South Island
New Zealand

Picton, South Island, New Zealand.
Gay and Lesbian Hotels, Inns and Guest Houses - Reviews and Ratings. Gay and Lesbian Travel.

The Marlborough region encompasses the northern part of South Island, a region of sunshine, wine and stunning natural beauty. Picton is the first port of call for travelers who cross the Cook Strait from Wellington, New Zealand’s capital, located at the southern tip of North Island.

There's plenty of gay-friendly hotels, guesthouses and traditional B&B's to choose from at prices that meet most budgets and personal preferences.

Inter-island ferries to and from Wellington arrive and depart here by way of the Marlborough Sounds. The Main North railway line and State Highway 1 link Picton to Blenheim, Christchurch and all points south. As an alternative, you can take the more scenic Queen Charlotte Drive, which although shorter in distance, is slower than State Highway 1. The daily TranzCoastal long-distance passenger train to Christchurch begins and terminates in Picton. And if you prefer to fly, Picton Airport at nearby Koromiko has regular services to Wellington and charter flights around the Marlborough sounds.

If you arrive by sea from the North Island, the Marlborough Sounds appear as a maze of incredibly beautiful and isolated islands, sheltered inlets and rugged headlands. The ferries make their way up the scenic Queen Charlotte Sound to land at the former whaling settlement of Picton, now a convenient overnight stop and the start of the Queen Charlotte Walkway. The best way to explore this marine wonderland is by boat and visitors can choose between kayaking trips or relaxing cruises.

Forming part of the Marlborough region, Picton is in every other respect a sleepy, little town, where most visitors pass through on route to the larger nearby towns like Blenheim which produces world-class Sauvignon Blanc. But Picton has good range of accommodation available for the gay and lesbian traveler along with cafés and several fine craft galleries.

For those travelers who decide to stay a while in Picton, the main attraction is its close proximity to both Queen Charlotte Sound and the track. It is an ideal location for outdoor enthusiasts or those wanting simply to relax. This is an area of great natural beauty with a unique coastline of bays, coves and waterways. Several companies operate out of Picton offering activities such as kayaking, boat trips, dolphin watching and even diving.

Queen Charlotte Track is becoming increasingly popular for hikers. A water taxi from Picton transports hikers to Ship Cove and the beginning of the track. It’s worth noting that Ship Cove is considered by many travel writers as one of the six ‘must see’ tourist destinations in the world. Queen Charlotte Track is as lush but less busy than the nearby Abel Tasman.

From Picton you can visit remote bays and inlets far from the usual tourist beat, seek out dolphins, seals, and bird colonies. For bird lovers there is the Island Bird Sanctuary and Wildlife Sanctuary

The township of Waikawa is a couple of minutes' drive from Picton, making it practically part of Picton. Waikawa has one of the largest marinas in New Zealand.

So, if you're looking for a great base to explore the surrounding countryside and remote bays, then Picton, South Island, New Zealand is the perfect destination for gay and lesbian travelers.
