Gay Waikari

Waikari, South Island
New Zealand

Waikari, South Island, New Zealand.
Gay and Lesbian Hotels, Inns and Guest Houses - Reviews and Ratings. Gay and Lesbian Travel.

Waikari, located on State Highway 7 near the Weka Pass, is a small town in the Canterbury region, the largest region of New Zealand's South Island. The Weka Pass Railway Company has preserved a section of the Waiau Branch railway, and original steam trains shuttle between the wine region of Waipara and Waikari.

Waikari and the sister town of Hawarden are two charming rural townships at the end of the historic Weka Pass Railway. Centrally located, both towns offer panoramic views of the Puketeraki and Kaikoura ranges and are perfect locations for a relaxing getaway within easy driving distance of main tourist destinations and wineries.

Waikari lies in the ‘heartland of New Zealand”. A wide variety of accommodations for the gay and lesbian traveler visiting this scenic South Island region is available suitable to meet all budgets and travel requirements. You’ll find a range of gay friendly accommodation starting with budget-priced backpacker hostels, farm-stays, camping grounds and holiday parks, to self-contained cottages, motels, hotels, and gay friendly boutique bed and breakfast lodgings and luxury homesteads.

Waikari is also the gateway to the excellent fishing and hunting area around the Hurunui Lakes. This spectacular lake system consists of Lake Sumner, Loch Katrine, Lake Sheppard, Lake Taylor and Lake Mason. If fishing and hunting isn’t your thing, there’s plenty of walking tracks to hike and plenty of camp areas too.

Waikari is renowned for Maori cave artwork and the Waikari Walkway provides access to the Maori rock drawings in the Weka Pass Reserve. The walkway enjoys panoramic views of the Puketeraki and Kaikoura ranges and passes through an area rich in natural beauty and history.

The great thing about the town is its proximity to the Waipara wine region, home to around 24 wine producers, including 11 cellar door operations and three vineyard-based restaurants. The standard of wine produced in the Waipara Valley is world class – and they have the awards to prove it! Rich, spicy Pinot Noir and aromatic, dry Rieslings are specialties of the region, but wines ranging from Cabernet Sauvignon to Chardonnay and Gewürztraminer, can be grown, tasted and purchased here.

So, if you are a gay and lesbian traveler who enjoys the great outdoors, hiking, fishing, good food and excellent wine, then Kaikari, South Island has plenty to offer.
