Gay Oban

Oban, South Island
New Zealand

Oban, Stewart Island, New Zealand.
Gay and Lesbian Hotels, Inns and Guest Houses - Reviews and Ratings. Gay and Lesbian Travel.

Off the southern tip of the South Island, and an hour away by ferry from the town of Bluff, south of Invercargill, lies the country’s third largest island: Stewart Island. Stewart Island is a land of forests, sheltered coves close to open seas, white sand beaches, unique wildlife, and the serenity and splendor of nature.

There are several gay-friendly hotels and guesthouses for the gay and lesbian traveler to choose from ranging in price to suite most budgets.

It is an island that evokes among its visitors a heightened spirit of adventure. From kayaking in the seas to walking the forest tracks, Stewart Island is a blend of cliffs and crags and heavy bushland.

You can visit Stewart Island on a day trip, but it’s likely you’ll miss out on much that the island has to offer. Kayakers, for instance, will revel in the miles of sheltered waterways waiting to be explored. Then there is the excellent diving and snorkeling in the clear waters that surround the island. For those who like to take their vacation at a more leisurely pace, there are glass-bottomed boats for viewing what lies beneath the waves.

Most locals live in the town of Oban, on Half Moon Bay. The name means ‘many coves’ in Gaelic. From Oban you can take scenic, fishing and diving trips. This is also where the ferry from Bluff on the South Island docks. There is also an air link by Stewart Island Flights from Ryans Creek Aerodrome to Invercargill Airport.

The few buildings in the commercial sector are all within a five minute walk of the wharf. If you’re a shop-a-holic, you’re need therapy after a visit to the island. There just aren’t that many shops in Oban. However. you'll find all the essentials. The ‘Ship to Shore’ general store carries a good range of fresh food and grocery lines. Then there's the ‘Lettuce Inn’ for fresh fruit and veggies and ‘The Shoppe’ is good for drugstore lines. Ten minutes walk from the "city centre" is ‘The Fernery’, an art and craft gallery with an emphasis on natural history.

And when you’re hungry, there are some great options too. The "Travel Inn Tearooms" provide light meals and takeaways, whilst the "South Sea Hotel" offers a counter lunch as well as dining room service. The "Shearwater Inn" also takes casual diners for evening meals in their licensed restaurant. The Pub is the social centre for the Island and stocks a fine range of fine ales and cider on tap, and a pool table and darts for competitive traveler. You can also try a "wee dram" of the house, premium single-malt Scotch. It's Oban Whisky shipped in all the way from the "sister city" of Oban, Scotland, on the other side of the world.

So, for a truly distinctive vacation, Oban on the Stewart Island off the tip of New Zealand's South Island is a must for the gay and lesbian traveler who has been everywhere!
