Gay Waitomo

Waitomo, North Island
New Zealand

Waitomo, North Island, New Zealand.
Gay and Lesbian Hotels, Inns and Guest Houses - Reviews and Ratings. Gay and Lesbian Travel.

Deep underground in the heart of the Waitomo are a series of unique caves that will astound you. Here a group of limestone caverns located on scenic reserves is collectively known as the Waitomo Caves. They comprise the Waitomo Cave, the Ruakuri and Aranui Caves about two miles west. The Maori word Waitomo means "water entering a hole" but was regarded by them with superstitious dread as the home of the taniwha, a legendary monster, and by malign spirits.

For the gay and lesbian traveler, Waitomo offers a range of accommodation options, from the imposing grandeur of the turn-of-the-century Waitomo Caves Hotel to the uncontrived comforts of the Kiwipaka YHA for backpackers. There is something to suit all tastes and budgets.

Waitomo, located in King Country, is amongst New Zealand's most tranquil areas. Undulating green fields, tumbling waterfalls, spectacular rural vistas and, of course, its world-renowned limestone formations and cave system make Waitomo a destination like no other.

In the Waitomo Caves, thousands of tiny glowworms cling to the cave ceiling, creating a starry sky within the underground night. The deep limestone shaft known as the Tomo is amazing as is the equally magnificent Cathedral cavern where New Zealand’s great opera diva Kiri Te Kanawa once performed.

The Ruakuri Cave, newly reopened, is home to swirling rivers, echoing waterfalls, and rocks that flow into delicate shawl-like formations. Translated, Ruakuri means ‘den of dogs’ taking its name from the wild dogs that made their home in the cave entrance.

The Aranui Cave, is said to be the most beautiful of the three for the delicacy of the stalactite formation, built up over centuries by the slow but constant drip of water from the roof of the cave.

Waitomo is situated within easy reach of the North Island’s main urban centers. The town is twelve miles north of Te Kuiti and forty-seven miles south-west from Hamilton. Hamilton, the heart of New Zealand's dairy farming industry, is the nearest major city lying just 1 hours drive away. New Zealands largest city Auckland is 3 hours driving distance and the holiday playgrounds of Taupo, Rotorua and Mount Ruapehu are only 1 hour from Waitomo.

And you'll find the local people, many of whom are directly involved in Waitomo tourism, to be friendly and knowledgeable. If you need help, just ask.

So, if you're touring North Island, then Waitomo is certainly a destination seasoned gay and lesbian travelers should explore.
