Gay and Lesbian Hotels, Inns and Guest Houses - Reviews and Ratings. Gay and Lesbian Travel.

Murchison, known as the 'Whitewater Capital' of New Zealand, is a small town located in the Tasman region at the north end of South Island. The town is on the Buller Gorge Heritage (State) Highway some 80 miles (125km) south of Nelson and 186 miles (300kms) northwest of Christchurch.

The district is steeped in history from the days of the gold miners, early settlers, and the 1929 earthquake. Lyell, once one of the largest gold mining settlements in the South Island, is nearby, and offers an interesting example of how quickly the bush can wipe away traces of civilization.

Murchison has developed as an important service centre for the travelers and the substantial local farming community. They say that there are as many valleys surrounding Murchison as there are town’s people. The district is dominated by rugged escarpments, bush clad ranges, beautiful unspoiled lakes, sparkling streams, fast flowing rivers with awe-inspiring rapids and waterfalls between tranquil stretches of water.

The spectacular vistas and varied activities make Murchison a singular Great Outdoors paradise for gay and lesbian travelers of all age groups. There is a wide range of gay friendly accommodation available ranging from backpackers, campgrounds to luxury lodges in spectacular settings.

The Alpine Tourism Centre located at Beechwoods Complex on the main street in Murchison offers booking services of activities and attractions for visitors to Murchison. These include white water rafting and river kayaking, and they can help you with your activity bookings in Nelson/Abel Tasman National Park/Golden Bay areas, as well as the West Coast/Fox & Franz Josef glaciers, Blenheim, Kaikoura and Queenstown.

For those who like fishing, the local rivers and streams come well stocked with brown trout. If rainbow trout is your challenge check out the Maruia River above the Maruia falls. If you need guidance, the are fishing guides available too.

For those seeking a mega adrenalin rush, there are superb stretches of river accessible to the first-time enthusiast as well as and more experience rafting; the area offers Grade 2 to Grade 5 runs through magnificent scenery.
Many rivers also had excellent stretches of water for canoeists of all levels of ability and experience. The Buller River and its tributaries offer breathtaking experiences.

Then there are the high-country and valley tracks that wind through this region. Of particular interest are those around the Nelson Lakes region, the Matakitaki Valley and the Matiri range

If you feel like trying your luck, gold panning, an activity as old as the township itself is the perfect way to relax for a few hours.

For the golfer, there’s a delightful nine hole golf course just to the north of the town ship, set alongside the Buller River with a background of superb mountain views.

And you shouldn't forget about mountain biking, caving and mountaineering, all accessible from Murchison.

So of you're looking for adventure, fun and the great outdoors, Murchison, South Island, New Zealand has plenty to offer the gay and lesbian traveler.
