Big Bear Lake, California, USA.
Gay and Lesbian Hotels, Inns and Guest Houses - Reviews and Ratings. Gay and Lesbian Travel.

Big Bear Valley, California, was first occupied by the Serrano Indians approximately 3,000 years ago. In 1845, while in pursuit of Indians, Benjamin D. Wilson discovered and named Bear Valley because "the place was alive with bears!" In 1860 William Holcomb was hunting bear and discovered gold instead! What followed was Southern California's largest gold rush. Big Bear's first dam, completed in 1884, was soon followed by the Valley's first hotel in 1888. In 1949 the first ski resort opened and Big Bear Lake soon became Southern California's favorite mountain getaway.

Big Bear Lake offers a wide range of gay-friendly deluxe hotels, inns, boutique guesthouses, traditional bed and breakfasts, cabin and lodges for the gay and lesbian traveler. Prices and amenities range from budget to the luxurious, so there is plenty of choice for the discerning gay and lesbian traveler.

Getting back to nature, camping in the woods, off road driving and picnicking are on one end of the spectrum of possibilities for exploring the Valley from Big Bear Lake. At the other end are luxury hotels, gourmet dining and professional theatre productions.

Big Bear Lake is hidden in a valley high in the San Bernardino Mountains of Southern California, within two hours of both San Diego and Los Angeles. This mountain venue is surrounded by thousands of acres of national forest, offering a wide range of recreational options. At an altitude of nearly 7,000 feet and surrounded by mountain peaks, Big Bear Lake and sister communities of Big Bear City and Fawnskin hug the shores of a seven mile lake.

These unique small-town communities provide food, lodging and entertainment for thousands of visitors annually. Together with the range of accommodation, Big Bear Lake also offers the widest selection of restaurants, cafés and bars to satisfy all budgets, appetites and tastes. Depending on what you fancy, there are restaurants offering Italian, Mandarin, Szechwan, Chinese, American, Mexican, European, French and Japanese menus, to name but a few of the choices.

Big Bear Lake is a perfect destination for lovers of the great outdoors. The Lake and surrounding mountains provides a spectacular setting for many outdoor activities, including during summer months, fishing (trout, bluegill, crappie, catfish and largemouth bass), pleasure boating, and water skiing. Because of the very cold water and the presence of underwater obstacles near the shorelines, swimming is not a good idea. Many lakeside residents have private docks, and visiting boaters obtain mooring in several of the marinas found on both shores. During the winter months, the mountains surrounding the lake offer some of the finest skiing and snowboarding available as well as other winter sports and activities. Best known for hosting two of Southern California’s prime ski areas, Big Bear offers entirely different vistas when warmer seasons return. Truly a four-season playground, spring, summer and fall bring another set of recreational opportunities into play.

If you should want to relax for all the sporting options available, then spend some time shopping in specialty gift shops, or treating yourself to the services of a local spa.

One final piece of information, Hollywood also has a history in Big Bear. Since the filming of "The Call of the North" in 1914, so many motion pictures have been shot in Big Bear Valley that it has been called "Hollywood's back lot." Paint Your Wagon," "The Parent Trap," "Bonanza," "Kissin' Cousins," were all filmed here.

So, Big Bear Lake, California, is the perfect destination for gay and lesbian travelers who love the great outdoor
