Gay and Lesbian Hotels, Inns and Guest Houses - Reviews and Ratings. Gay and Lesbian Travel.

In 1970 Batam, Indonesia had no cars, few roads, 98% of the island was covered by forest and a population was 7,000. Today, Batam is a major logistics base for many of the world's major contractors and is growing in size by over 30% each year. Few places in the world are expanding this fast and Batam is Indonesia’s wealthiest city. Almost no one in Batam comes from Batam, well over half the 1 million population is single, aged between 20 and 30. The city also is untouched by the politics and problems found in other parts of Indonesia; infact many travelers liken the city to Singapore, which just happens to be 12 miles (20km) to the north. Today Batam has become popular with day trippers and weekend visitors, who flock to the island for its golf, duty free shopping (selling everything from European cognac to Balinese handicrafts and Sumartran wood carvings), sun drenched beaches and delicious seafood restaurants. More than 600,000 tourist visit Batam each year, more than any other place in Indonesia except for Bali. Ferries ply every 30 minutes during daylight hours between the World trade centre in Singapore and either Sekupang or Batu Ampur on the north coast of Bintam.

Batam has great choice of gay-friendly hotels (international and domestic), guesthouses and traditional bed and breakfast accommodation for the gay and lesbian traveler. Prices and amenities offered range from budget to truly luxurious so there is plenty of choice for even the most discerning gay and lesbian traveler.

Nagoya, is the heart of Batam, and its largest town. Nagoya has all that you want to have a fun time. You can find numerous shops, restaurants, hotels, discos, karaoke, cinemas, bars, music lounges, shopping plaza, night markets and more. Most banks and money changers are also situated here.

The up and coming "Orchard Road" is the commercial centre of Batam. The largest shopping centre in Batam - Matahari, is located here. In addition, you can find banks, post office, departmental stores, restaurants and residential complexes.

Nestled on the north eastern extreme of the island, Nongsa serves as another gateway to Batam. Golf courses, resort hotels, marinas, chalet style bungalows and many tourist activities can be found here.

May to September are warm and pleasant months, while the rainy season is between October and April. The average temperature of the day in coastal areas varies from about 28ºC (82ºF) during May, June, July to about 30ºC (86ºF) in March and October.

If golf’s your thing, there are six golf courses located throughout the island. Alternatively, you can go diving or use the seaports facilities at Batam View Beach Resort. Then there’s the old palace and fort on historic Penyenget Island so see. For a little exercise, go mountain biking along the trails around Duriankang Reseviour and along the Nongsa coast. Go swimming with dolphins or take a small boat to old fashioned Bee Pee Island. Beaches are fairly limited on Batam. There one at the Batam View Beach Resort (and not at low tide, either) but most locals travel down to Melur Beach on Galang Island which is linked to Batam by five bridges.

Batam has plenty of fresh produce, including imported meats, fruits and vegetables. With Singapore only an hour away by ferry, there are plenty of places to dine both in Batam and in Singapore. Dining options range from eating in one of the many outdoor courts which open only at night to great seafood restaurants on the waterfront. Then there are the finer restaurants serving Chinese, Korean, Indian, Thai and Western cuisine. You can even dine in a traditional British pud serving great pub grub such as home-make bangers (sausages) and
