Gay Strasbourg

Strasbourg, Alsace
France

Strasbourg, Alsace, France.
Gay and Lesbian Hotels, Inns and Guest Houses - Reviews and Ratings. Gay and Lesbian Travel.

Strasbourg, France is the capital of Alsace, a university town, the see of a bishop, seat of the Council of Europe, the European Commission of Human Rights and the European Science Foundation. The city sits on the German Franco border and at the intersection of important traffic routes on the left bank of the Rhine where the River Ill, the Rhine-Marne Canal and the Rhine-Rhône Canal converge. As a result, Strasbourg and its people have a distinctive local identity, combining the reputed efficiency and energy of the Germans with the joie de vivre and sophistication of the French.

Although specifically gay accommodation is limited, Strasbourg does have a great selection of gay friendly hotels, inns and guesthouses for the gay and lesbian traveler. Prices and amenities range from modest to magnificent so there is plenty of choice to satisfy all budgets and tastes.

For decades, gay and lesbian travelers have delighted in Strasbourg’s famous soaring cathedral featuring carvings as delicate as any piece of lacework and the many burghers' houses dating from the 16th and 17th centuries. The Cathédrale Notre-Dame in the Vieille Ville or Old Town, has remained unchanged since the Middle Ages and around the Cathedral is a great collection of museums, cafes and restaurants.

Strasbourg brims with elegant buildings in the Louis XV style, many dating from the time of the 18th century French Cardinal-Bishops. The city is far enough away from Paris to be truly independent on a cultural level, with its own opera, France's only national theatre outside Paris and two international music festivals. The Grande Ile (Big Island), in the midst of the River Ill, is the ancient heart of the city, with the vast main square, Place Kléber at its centre.

For gay and lesbian shopaholics the city centre's attractive main shopping streets Rue des Grandes Arcades and parallel Rue des Francs Bourgeois are remarkably small and pedestrian friendly. The stunningly picturesque Petite France, in the Grande Ile's southwestern corner, is Strasbourg's medieval quarter and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With its bridges and canals, half-timbered houses and narrow streets, it could not be more different from the ultra-modern City of Europe in northeast Strasbourg where the EU institutions are located.

The region around Strasbourg is one of the best areas in France for gay and lesbian lovers of fine cuisine. Regional dishes capture the boldness of its German roots, and the quality and finesse that is the mark of French gourmet cuisine. Must do’s include, visiting a local winstub to sample the white, light and tart Rieslings and Gewurztraminers and excellent Alsatian beers; sampling the local "eau de vie" literally meaning "water of life," an Alsatian fruit liquor sweetened entirely by fruit rather than sugar; filling up on local specialties like Baeckoffe (a stew of meats, potatoes and spices) and Coq au Riesling (similar to coq au vin, but is made with Riesling rather than red burgundy). And Alsatian desserts are among the world's best!

So, what takes your fancy? Castles...cycling trips...an excellent restaurant…historic buildings? Or touring the vineyards, lakes and mountains, or visit the region’s towns or villages. The Northern Vosges Regional Nature Park is listed as a World Biosphere Reserve. The Wine Route weaves its way through miles of vineyards and wine producing areas. The Romanesque Route takes in some of Alsace’s finest examples of Romanesque art.
There’s so much to see and do in the region, that Strasbourg makes an excellent base.

So, whether it’s history, cuisine, wine, architecture or natural beauty, Strasbour, France has much to offer the discerning gay and lesbian traveler.
