Gay Managua

Managua,
Nicaragua

Managua, Nicaragua.
Gay and Lesbian Hotels, Inns and Guest Houses - Reviews and Ratings. Gay and Lesbian Travel.

No matter which way you look at it, Managua is a challenge for most gay and lesbian travelers. It’s hot, has fewer sights or cultural experiences than that offered by other Central American cities and with few street names, getting around is interesting. But for the tenacious gay and lesbian traveler, Managua does have things to enjoy but without a local contact, even these will be elusive.

Managua has no gay specific accommodation but there are a few gay friendly hotels and guesthouses for the gay and lesbian traveler. Sex between same sex couples is a criminal offence so extreme caution is required.

Set on the southern shore of Lago de Managua, Managua is hot, low-lying and swampy. The city is home to Nicaragua's few national museums and cultural organizations, most of them in the old ruined centre, whose historic cathedral is worth visiting, along with the Palacio Nacional, a museum of Nicaragua's culture and the home of its national library.

That said, the reality is that there are few sights of interest, though the good news is that most of the city's modest attractions can be found within a few blocks of each other – an advantage in the draining heat.

A new commercial center is being created along the Carretera a Masaya, just over the hill of Laguna de Tiscapa. A new Metrocentro shopping centre has opened here, along with hotels, restaurants, bars and cinemas. The nearby district of Altamira boasts a number of elegant restaurants and cafés serving tourists and the city's smart set.

It is important to mention Managua’s street crime which is on the rise, not so much for foreigners as for Managuans, since gang warfare is an increasing problem. Even so, it's best to travel by taxi, even in the daytime; not to walk around at night; and generally to be on your guard.

So, for a very different destination, Managua, Nicaragua is a destination that the adventurous gay and lesbian traveler should consider.
