Gay Reykjavik

Reykjavik,
Iceland

Reykjavik, Iceland gay and lesbian hotels. Reviews and ratings for gay and lesbian travelers.

The gay scene

The gay scene and society in Iceland is small but active and open. It exists mostly in the capital Reykjavík but the northern branch in Akureyri is getting stronger each year. Iceland as a gay friendly destination has received great reviews, being on various top ten lists and recipient of 5 pink stars from Diva magazine. With its gay friendly atmosphere Iceland has come a long way since the Gay rights association, Samtökin’78 was founded in 1978 by a few brave people. Now in the 2010 the LGBT community stands equal to straight people in the eyes of the law. The Reykjavík Gay Pride has become one of the biggest celebrations of the nation with 85.000 people attending the parade and the down town festivities with prejudice towards lgbt people diminishing.

Reykjavík Gay Pride Is not like any other pride you’ll ever see. It is a celebration that brings together a nation in pride, respect, love and of course a lot of fun. It recently celebrated its tenth birthday and has come a long way during that time. In the first parade the people literally ran down the street almost afraid to be seen but now almost athird of the nation comes to Laugavegur to celebrate and watch the parade. The parade is free of commercials and it surely is the parade of the people where each float is often made up by a group of friends each deciding their own theme. The festivities extend from Wednesday to Sunday during the second weekend in August. Through the years there have been movie premiers, plays, sport events, rainbow church ceremonies, gay history walks, gay cruises, opening ceremonies, queer literature walks, family festivals, pride dances and of course the parade.

TRÚNÓ Gay Café & Bar Reykjavik’s very own gay café opened in October 2010. It is located on Laugavegur 22 in the same house as the gay night club Barbara which is upstairs. The queer crowd in Iceland has a very strong connection to Laugavegur 22 since in the 1980's there was a gay bar there, but people who went there at that time were often confronted by violence. Laugavegur 22 is now safe and tolerant and considered the gay palace of Reykjavík.

Events at Trúnó are nonstop and every week there is something special happening. On Wednesday nights there is a screening of Ru Paul’s Drag Race, the American reality TV show about drag queens competing to be the next drag superstar. On Sundays there is “The day after” when the chocolate milk is extra cold and the coffee extra strong. Music theme nights are popular at Trúnó, when favourite divas are picked for a night of their music is in the spotlight.

Trúnó is a great place to kickstart your weekend evenings and on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights the crowd gathers at Trúnó earlier than most other places. The music is loud and the drinks flow freely. You can take the wheel of fortune for a spin and see whether the cute one next to you has plans to continue the evening upstairs at Barbara.

Barbara is pink, joyous, happy and the only GAY dance club in Iceland. It is located above Trúnó on the second and third floor on Laugavegur 22. The owner's philosophy is that everyone is greeted with a smile and should feel right at home in the welcoming atmosphere, irrespective of sexual preference. The crowd is mostly gay and lesbian but like any gay bar it is becoming more and more popular with everyone who just loves to dance. At Barbara the music is always good, queer and thumping ‘til 5 in the morning on Fridays and Saturdays. There are no laws against dancing on tables, singing at the top of your lungs and taking your shirt off. Barbara is closed from Sunday – Thursday. Opening hours, Friday and Saturday 23:00 – 05:00. Entry is free, except on very special occasions.

LGBT organisations

Samtökin ’78, the national queer organization, is an interest and activist group for homosexuals, bisexuals and transgender people in Iceland. The organization’s goal is for LGBT persons to be visible and recognized and enjoy their rights to the fullest in Icelandic society. Samtökin ’78 runs a community centre in downtown Reykjavík, located on the 4th floor on Laugavegur 3 and is open for all. Open house is on Mondays and Thursday evenings, with a varied programme of events advertised on the organisation’s website.

LGBT tour operator

Pink Iceland is the first and only tour operator in Iceland dedicated to LGBT clientele. Iceland is a great destination for LGBT travelers because of the gay friendly atmosphere. Lesbian couple Eva Maria and Birna Hronn are the founders and owners of Pink Iceland. Their goal is to make your stay in Iceland as wonderful and welcoming as possible. They offer an array of services from booking short tours around Reykjavík to all-inclusive luxury excursions around the country. They also organize events with local and international LGBT groups. Pink Iceland partners are either gay owned, gay operated or gay friendly and with a great cooperation of this Icelandic velvet mafia the will make your stay unforgettable.
