Gay Siena

Siena, Tuscany

Siena, Tuscany, Italy.
Gay and Lesbian Hotels, Inns and Guest Houses - Reviews and Ratings. Gay and Lesbian Travel.

SIENA is the perfect antidote to Florence and Rome. It is a unified, modern city at ease with its medieval past and traditions. It's a place not easily read by outsiders, and to get anything meaningful from a visit gay and lesbian travelers need to stay at least one night. All too often too many visitors just skim the surface of the city on a day-trip.

Siena has no specific gay hotels, inns and guesthouses marketed to the gay and lesbian traveler. That said, there are plenty of gay friendly hotels, inns and guesthouses for the gay and lesbian traveler to choose from. Prices and amenities vary from budget to luxurious so there is no end of choice for even the most discerning gay and lesbian traveler.

Siena is a self-contained city built within medieval walls and the city’s great attraction is its cityscape, a majestic Gothic building patchwork that can be enjoyed without venturing into a single museum. The physical and spiritual heart of the city is the great scallop-shaped Piazza il Campo, perhaps the loveliest of all Italian squares and scene of the thrilling Palio bareback horse-race, run on July 2 and August 16.

Siena's Duomo and Palazzo Pubblico are two of the purest examples of Italian Gothic architecture. The city’s two famous art galleries, the Museo Civico and Pinacoteca Nazionale houses some of the finest examples of Sienese Gothic. And frescoes fill the halls of Santa Maria della Scala, the city's hospital for over 900 years and now its premier exhibition space.

The cities history can be traced back to the twelfth and thirteenth centuries when Siena was one of the major cities of Europe. Since World War II, Siena has again become prosperous, owing partly to tourism and partly to the resurgence of the Monte dei Paschi di Siena. This bank, founded in Siena in 1472 and currently the city's largest employer, is one of the major players in Italian finance.

It goes without saying that dining in Siena is a food lovers paradise. The surrounding Tuscany hills produce some of Italy’s finest wines and produce. So whether lunch or dinner is on the itinerary, there is plenty of choice to meet all budgets and appetites.

Getting to Siena couldn’t be easier for the gay and lesbian traveler. It is 2-3 hours from Rome by train and 3-4 hours from Milan. The closest airports are Florence and Pisa. Traffic is limited within the walls of the city but there are parking lots outside the center that are served by shuttle bus. Some are within walking distance but it is a long walk.

The most popular trip from Siena is northwest to the picturesque multi-towered village of San Gimignano. Far fewer people take the trouble to sample the ancient Etruscan town of Volterra, famous for it’s alabaster, a highly rewarding stop en route west from Siena to Pisa.

So, for the gay and lesbian traveler in search of a unique Italian destination, Siena has plenty to offer.
