Gay Trieste

Trieste, Italy.
Gay and Lesbian Hotels, Inns and Guest Houses - Reviews and Ratings. Gay and Lesbian Travel.

The city of Trieste lies at the very edge of north-east Italy, sandwiched by Slovenia and the Adriatic Sea. Trieste is amongst Italy's most unique cities and Mediterranean resorts, and much of its former Neo-classical architectural grandeur lives on. Today, Trieste is often overlooked by gay and lesbian travelers who choose instead to visit more well-known Italian cities, such as Venice, 162 km/101 miles to the west. Yet Trieste has much to offer; cultural attractions, quality museums, endless coffee shops and ancient Roman remains. The city is also the perfect base for exploring the coastline and its many historic and architectural gems, such as the Castello di Miramare.

Trieste has a limited number of gay accommodation but there is a good selection of gay friendly hotels, inns, guesthouses and apartments for the gay and lesbian traveler. Prices and amenities range from budget to deluxe so there is plenty of choice for even the most discerning gay and lesbian traveler.

For gay and lesbian lovers of history and architecture, Trieste’s medieval quarter of the Old Town, and also within the New Town district has some trying amazing buildings. The Basilica di San Silvestro is one attraction not to miss, standing atop the Colle Capitolino hill. The Trieste Cathedral dating back to the 14th-century is equally impressive and presides over the Piazza della Cattedrale. The city's harbor is amongst the main landmarks within Trieste and always a hub of activity, as is the Piazza dell'Unità d'Italia, an enormous square edging the seafront and home to the Town Hall. The city is well known throughout Friuli-Venezia Giulia for its Roman amphitheatre, built some 2,000 years ago, while for some of the best views across Trieste, climb the 200 steps to the top of the Victory Lighthouse.

Gay and lesbian travelers will soon realize that Trieste is a very good base for exploring this region of Italy. Close by are a number of seaside towns, such as Muggia and Grado. The coastal town of Lignano is conveniently part way between Trieste and Venice, and near to the rather spectacular Marano Lagoon.

Trieste is a relatively small and compact city, but its wealth of history and architecture, excellent restaurants and cafes, boutique shopping and galleries, make this a very attractive destination for gay and lesbian travelers.
