Gay Taormina

Taormina, Sicily

Taormina, Sicily.
Gay and Lesbian Hotels, Inns and Guest Houses - Reviews and Ratings. Gay and Lesbian Travel.

Taormina has been one of Sicily's top gay and lesbian travel destinations made popular when it was part of the European Grand Tour back in the 19th century. Today, it is Sicily's first resort. Taormina is steeped in history, reflecting its Greek and Roman habitation and its fine medieval heritage and castle ruins. Today is has added modern boutique shopping, family run businesses, ceramic and pottery shops, galleries, restaurants, street sides cafes and bars. Perched on the side of Monte Tauro, Taormina offers fantastic views of the coastline and the Mt. Etna volcano. Below the town are excellent beaches where you can swim in the clear blue water. Although Taormina can be visited all year, spring and fall are the best times. July and August are hot and crowded.

There are no gay specific hotels or guesthouses in Taormina, but there are several excellent gay friendly hotels for the gay and lesbian traveler to choose from. These range in price and amenities offered from family run hotels to four star hotels set in parkland overlooking Mt. Etna and the bay, so there is plenty of choice for even the most discerning gay and lesbian traveler.

Taormina is on the train line between Messina and Catania and can be reached by train directly from Rome. The station, Taormina-Giardini, is just over a mile (2km) below the center and served by shuttle buses. Regular buses run from Palermo, Catania and airport, and Messina arriving in the center of town. A car ferry runs from the mainland to Messina, then take the A18 along the coast about 30 minutes. Driving in the center is very limited. There are two large parking lots on the outskirts.

Taormina has many excellent restaurants in all price categories. It's a great place for seafood and outdoor dining, often with stunning views. Taormina's center, especially ‘Corso Umberto’, is a good place for shopping. There are many shops selling mostly Sicilian products, although gay and lesbian travelers find designer fashions and jewelry from mainland Italy, too. There are shops for fashion, jewelry, crafts, mosaics, ceramics, pottery, puppets, porcelain dolls, and other souvenirs.

Taormina Arte festival runs from June through August. Plays, concerts, and a film festival are held outdoors in the spectacular Greek amphitheater during summer. ‘Madonna della Rocca’ is celebrated over the second weekend of September with a religious procession and feast. Taormina has one of the best Carnavale celebrations in Sicily and in May there's a traditional costume and Sicilian cart fair.

So, for gay and lesbian travelers seeking a stunning historic destination offering century old architecture, stunning natural beauty, great food and wine, superior accommodation and a truly Sicilian atmosphere, then Taormina, Sicily has it all.
