Gay Salisbury

Salisbury, Wiltshire
UK

Salisbury, Wiltshire, UK.
Gay and Lesbian Hotels, Inns and Guest Houses - Reviews and Ratings. Gay and Lesbian Travel.

Salisbury, Wiltshire, England is easy to get to from London and is in the center of an area full of fascinating sights and experiences. That said, it seems strange that Salisbury is often neglected by many gay and lesbian travelers visiting England. The compact town center is easy to explore with some lovely old buildings. Salisbury's beautiful cathedral dates back to 1220 and has the tallest spire of any cathedral in England.

For the gay and lesbian traveler, there are a few gay guesthouses and traditional bed and breakfast accommodations to choose from as well as a good selection of gay friendly hotels, inns and guesthouses too. Rates and amenities vary and range from budget to luxurious, so there is plenty of choice for even the most discerning traveler.

The city of Salisbury can be experienced in a single day train trip from London, but there is so much to see and do around Salisbury that the gay and lesbian traveler will find plenty to do to stay longer to explore the surrounding countryside.

Salisbury, on the banks of the River Avon, is best known for its proximity to Stonehenge and for its glorious Cathedral and the other buildings in the Cathedral’s Close. There are three main attractions within the Close. The first is the Mompesson House, a Queen Anne style house built in 1701, and its walled garden. The others are the two museums. One is the Salisbury and South Wiltshire Museum, set in an old medieval building known as the King’s House. The other is the Royal Gloucestershire, Berkshire and Wiltshire Regiment Museum, in a 1254 house that was one of the first buildings erected in the Close.

Salisbury Cathedral, painted by famous British painter John Constable, is generally considered to be England’s finest medieval cathedral, and is unusual because it was all built at the same time with none of the subsequent additions of most other cathedrals. Construction began 1220, with most of the work complete by 1258. 2008 celebrated the 750th anniversary of this gorgeous building. It has the tallest spire (404 ft) of all the English cathedrals, and the extra 6500 tons of tower and spire added after the original construction have caused the support columns in the church to visibly buckle under the weight.

The Cathedral also houses one of the four remaining originals of the Magna Carta, the British equivalent of the US Constitution, signed in 1215, and the oldest working clock in all Europe, built in 1386.

The town retains some lovely medieval streets and the 15th century Poultry Cross is worth a visit. Market days, every Tuesday and Saturday, are always fun and offer a real taste of English country life. There’s also plenty of great restaurants, traditional pubs and cafes to enjoy a light lunch or a delicious supper.

Within easy traveling distance of Salisbury is the ancient Druid site of Stonehenge, the town of Romsey, ‘Broadlands’, the former home of Lord Mountbatten, and the beautiful New Forest. Also worth visiting are Old Sarum, Woodhenge, and Avebury, including driving past several White Horses.

So for the gay and lesbian traveler in search of a taste of old England, then Salisbury, Wiltshire, England has plenty to offer.
