Gay Valdivia

Valdivia, Chile.
Gay and Lesbian Hotels, Inns and Guest Houses - Reviews and Ratings. Gay and Lesbian Travel.

Valdivia, Southern Chile is one of the most historic cities in all southern Chile. Valdivia was founded as the frontier with Mapuche Native Land in 1552 by Pedro de Valdivia. It has also been on Chile’s cultural frontier for hundreds of years weaving together a colorful mix of Mapuche, Spanish, and German history that has created one of the most spectacular cities in southern Chile for gay and lesbian travelers to visit and explore.

Valdivia, Chile, known as the City of Rivers, dates back to 1522 when the Spanish founded the first settlement. It grew in importance as the perfect stopping off port for ships rounding Cape Horn or navigating the Strait of Magellan on the route to Lima and Peru. In 1960, Valdivia was near the epicenter of a 9.5 earthquake, one of the strongest earthquakes ever. Much of Valdivia and nearby historic forts were destroyed, the river courses changed and where the earth sank, the resulting flooding created an aquatic area now maintained as the wetlands of the Santuario de la Naturaleza Carlos Anwandter. The Cau Cau and Calle Calle rivers bisect and surround the city, and add much to the natural scenic beauty.

Valdivia offers a good selection of gay friendly hotels, guesthouses and hostels for the gay and lesbian traveler. Rates and amenities range from budget to deluxe so there is plenty of choice for even the most discerning gay and lesbian traveler.

Valdivia is an all-season destination, with an overall temperate, if rainy, climate. Spring and summer, from November to April, are the drier months but expecting rain at any time. Every February, honoring the city’s founding, the Semana Valdiviana celebrations include the internationally renowned art competition, the boat parades and fireworks on the Calle Calle river.

For those gay and lesbian travelers looking for something to do, Valdivia has plenty to offer. Visit the historic forts at Niebla and Corral or sample authentic German beer and cuisine in the Kuntsmann Brewery and Restaurant. Explore the riverside markets, and sample the fine local seafood and locally make chocolate. Take the Isla Huapi cruise, or the all-day voyage on the seven rivers to get a feel for the historic significance, natural beauty and wildlife of the region. Ride the only remaining steam train, El Valdiviano, between Valdivia and Antilhue for a taste of the past.

So, for the adventurous gay and lesbian traveler looking for a uniquely different vacation, Valdivia, Patagonia, Chile has plenty to offer.
