Dumfries,
UK

Dumfries, Scotland, UK.
Gay and Lesbian Hotels, Inns and Guest Houses - Reviews and Ratings. Gay and Lesbian Travel.

Dumfries, Scotland, known as Queen of the South, is the capital of this Western region of the British Isles. This attractive town consists of houses painted in soft colors of blue, cream, green or buff, mixed with important buildings built of local red sandstone. In the centre of the town is the Midsteeple, completed in 1708 to provide a meeting place for the town council as well as a courtroom and prison. Many of the main attractions visited by gay and lesbian travelers are linked with Robert Burns and a statue of the great poet overlooks the town’s High Street. It was in Dumfries that Robert Burns spent the last five years of his life, from 1791 to 1796. Associations include the house where he lived, the tavern where he spent much of his time, and his tomb, as well as a splendid Robert Burns Centre in an old sandstone mill building by the river.

Dumfries has a good selection of gay friendly hotels, inns and traditional bed and breakfast accommodation for the gay and lesbian traveler to choose from. Prices and amenities range from budget to deluxe so there is plenty of choice to satisfy all pockets and tastes.

The surrounding areas have always had an agricultural base with much of its economy dependent on sheep and cattle farming. Dumfries has a long tradition in the manufacturing knitwear and hosiery. For gay and lesbian lovers of good traditional food, Dumfries will not disappoint. Galloway beef is world famous and local butchers specialize in locally farmed pork products including cured bacon, sausages, ribs, pies and potted meats made in the traditional way as butchers used to do.

Dumfries also has some fine museums and libraries focusing on its history and a fascinating camera obscura that projects a moving panoramic view of the district. Ellisland Farm near Dumfries is where Robert Burns lived and where he wrote many of his best nature poems and songs. The town’s art gallery displays work of local and contemporary artists and the centre offers gay and lesbian travelers a range of facilities including two golf courses, nightclubs, film theatre in the Burns Heritage Centre, as well as good shopping. Dumfries holds an annual Arts Festival and the yearly Guid Nychburris Festival, with the Crowning of the Queen of the South.

So, for a destination offering history, poetry, art, good traditional food and wonderful countryside, then Dumfries, Scotland, has plenty to offer the gay and lesbian traveler.
