Alicante, Spain is located on the Mediterranean coast and is one of the fastest growing cities in Spain. Dating back over 7,000 years, Alicante has become a major tourist destination for gay and lesbian travelers the world over. Alicante is famous for its wonderful boulevard with palm trees and shopping streets. The original name of the city “Lucentum” translates as ”City of Light”. This attractive town along the Costa Blanca has stunning beaches, old plazas, parks, adventure and great weather. The city provides fun, entertainment and also a great nightlife for gay and lesbian tourists.

Accommodation for gay and lesbian travelers visiting Alicante is plentiful and ranges in price and quality to meet the needs of most gay travelers. Although there are a some gay specific hotels and guesthouses, there are any number of gay-friendly hotels, inns, guesthouses and bed and breakfast accommodations throughout the city.

Alicante has of the most vibrant nightlife’s in Spain. The city offers a selection of entertainment for gay and lesbian travelers, with a large range of nightclubs and bars dotted throughout the city. The port area (El Peurto) of Alicante is especially known as having a very vibrant nightlife to suit all tastes and budgets. The ‘chiringuitos’ (Kiosks) on the Postiguet and San Juan beaches are said to host some of the hottest parties during the summer. El Barrio is known for its fantastic nightlife and its narrow lanes are filled with a variety of bars. The Esplanada is more popular during the summer months and also caters for a complex range of music tastes. Bars and clubs usually open at 11pm and close around 4-5am providing plenty of time for gay and lesbian revelers to enjoy the nightlife that Alicante has to offer.

There’s plenty to see too. The Castle of Santa Bárbara, which sits high above the city, and the port of Alicante, are well work exploring. There are a number of notable museums too including the Archaeological Museum of Alicante and the Gravina Museum of Fine Arts there are painting and sculptures of Alicante from 16th century to 19th century.

And if you’re planning a visit in June, don’t miss the festival, Bonfires of Saint John, takes place during the summer solstice. This is followed a week later by seven nights of firework and pyrotechnic contests between companies on the urban beach Playa del Postiguet. Every summer in Alicante, a two-month-long program of music, theatre and dance is staged in the Paseo del Puerto

So, if you’re looking for culture, art, architecture, a vibrant gay scene and a destination to enjoy over a long weekend or a longer vacation, Alicante, Spain has much to offer the gay and lesbian traveler.
