Gay Carmelo

Carmelo, Uruguay.
Gay and Lesbian Hotels, Inns and Guest Houses - Reviews and Ratings. Gay and Lesbian Travel.

Uruguay, the second smallest nation on the South American continent, is a relatively undiscovered destination for American gay and lesbian travelers. Brazil lies to its north Brazil and Argentina is to the west and south. Uruguay is steeped with European ancestry, with nearly everyone descended from Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian origins. Uruguay offers a quiet, laid back destination that offers tranquility and solitude. The village of Carmelo, just across the Rio de la Plata from Buenos Aires, is an antique car collector's dream. Preservation of classic automobiles from the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s seems to be a pastime here. But Carmelo's real intrigue is that the town was once a center for bandits and smugglers, which somehow seems fitting that it now houses one of the area's glittering casinos.
Of course, you need a place to stay as you explore Uruguay.

Accommodations run the gamut on the coast, offering facilities, amenities and prices to suit the needs of the adventurous gay and lesbian traveler. There are several gay friendly hotels, inns and guesthouses from the gay and lesbian traveler to choose from, offering a range of rates and amenities suited to individual budgets and tastes.

Carmelo is fast becoming a center for wine. The climate, with its cool evenings and warm days, is perfect for growing grapes, and the emerging boutique wine industry. Uruguayan wineries produce about 800,000 bottles of wine each year. Three wineries are within a 40-kilometre (25-mile) radius of Carmelo and well worth visiting. Uruguay is one of those understated, tranquil, rural countries that is still unspoiled by over marketing and tourist popularity. And right now, that is not easy to find.

Whilst here, a day trip to Colonia, located on the Río de la Plata is well worth a visit. Founded in 1680 by the Portuguese, it was captured by Spain in 1763. The city features a number of small museums housed in original 18th-century homes, white-washed colonial buildings, a bevy of old cars, authentic restaurants and artisans' workshops. Colonia has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site by the United Nations.

So, for a very different type of vacation, Carmelo, Uruguay has plenty to offer the adventurous gay and lesbian traveler.
