Gay Playa Del Carmen

Playa Del Carmen,

Playa Del Carmen, Mexico.
Gay and Lesbian Hotels, Inns and Guest Houses - Reviews and Ratings. Gay and Lesbian Travel

Say Mexican vacation and most gay and lesbian travelers think of Puerto Vallarta or Acapulco on the Pacific coast, or the mega-party resort of Cancún on the Gulf coast. The resort less often mentioned but one that gay and lesbian travelers may want to consider is the vibrant and sophisticated destination of Playa del Carmen. The town is sheltered from the surf of the Gulf by the island of Cozumel, just off its eastern shores. Playa's pristine white beaches and azure waters are calmer than those of Cancún or Cozumel. The resort has long been a haunt of European travelers and instead of English; you'll hear mostly Spanish, German, Dutch, Italian and French spoken in Playa. The European influence has even extended to the beaches were generally top-optional is the rule for women.

There are no exclusively gay-only hotels, inns, guesthouses or bed and breakfast accommodations in Playa del Carmen, but there is a wide range of gay-friendly hotels from high end luxury to the inexpensive and simple. Upscale all-inclusive gay friendly resorts and hotels offer an overwhelming array of amenities, as well as activities and entertainment, so you don’t have to leave your resort.

Playa del Carmen is located on the upper eastern side of the Yucatan peninsula, 40 miles south of Cancún, and an hour's ferry ride away from Cozumel. Today, it is a bustling city and fabulous Caribbean vacation destination in its own right, now overshadowing Cozumel, whose beaches and nightlife don't measure up to the cosmopolitan vibe in Playa del Carmen.

Most travelers arrive from the U.S. at the international airports in Cancún or Cozumel. One tip is to fly into Cozumel airport if you can because it doesn't have the hundreds of international travelers that Cancún has, so it is less hectic. The best way to make the 45-minute trip to Playa from Cancun is by cab. From Cozumel, take a cab to the pier, and then ferry over to the mainland; the ferry will drop you off right in the heart of Playa del Carmen.

The heart of Playa del Carmen is Quinta Avenida, or "Fifth Avenue", a charming, mostly pedestrian zone, where tourists and locals promenading down the avenue every night of the week. Small shops, restaurants, bars and cafés line the avenue. There's always something happening at almost any hour.

When dining in Playa, think seafood. Playa del Carmen was a fishing village long before it was a tourist destination, and, as you lay on the beach perfecting your tan, you'll see fishermen drag in the day's catch that will probably be part of your dinner later that night. There are enough restaurants to suite all budgets, tastes and appetites, just follow the locals recommendations and your nose.

Many gay and lesbian visitors travel to Playa to get some well earned rest and relaxation, and Playa has some of the nicest beaches on the Yucatan. Playa Shangri-Lais is a clothing-optional and gay-popular (mostly male) just north of Playa del Carmen. Another beach listed as gay is just north of CoCo Beach, two beaches beyond the Shangri-La. In both cases, clothing is optional, but as always, exercise caution.

But if you plan to something more than veggin’ out by the pool or lounging on a sandy beach, there’s plenty to fill your day. You can explore the ruins of Tulúm, Cobáand Chichén Itzá or go scuba diving, snorkeling and some other water sport that takes your fancy. A tour of the Mayan ruins of Xel Ha, Xcaret, Xpu-Haand the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Preserveare close to Playa also make a great day out. There are plenty of tour operators from which to choose your days of fun.

So, for a vacation of relaxation, fun, sun, sea, culture and great regional and international cuisine, Playa del Carmen, Mexico has plenty to offer the discerning gay and lesbian traveler.
