Just read an article about a gay couple being handcuffed and detained by Mormon church security guards after kissing in Salt Lake City. We were planning a trip to Zion National Park, but may rethink, based on this incident. Would appreciate hearing from other Pink Choice travelers about their experiences.

This is terrible news. Don't let it stop you from visiting Utah. We loved it! Zion is beautiful, but don't overlook Bryce Canyon. We spent 3 days there hiking and horseback riding (very affordable), camped at the Bryce Canyon campground (great pool for use in the lodge.) When we were hiking back up, an elderly man was way ahead of us with his wife...all of us going very slowly (bring lots of water) and asked me (the fittest of the 4) if I could piggy back his wife up the rest of the way. His wife was small and light, mine not so. I said "I'll make you a deal, I'll piggy back your wife up if you piggy back mine up!" to which we all laughed. When we were heading into Salt Lake City on our way home, on the off ramp was a PFLAG ad on a billboard that read Someone you know and love is gay. We had a great time and if it meant we couldn't hold hands (which we did), I'd do it again and just not hold hands. It's so beautiful (although not holding hands is so sad.)

The Zion National Park is beautiful, so don't let the wacky Mormon's chase you away. I would also suggest you "butch up" and visit the Mormon Convention Center downtown. The completely brainwashed woman that are tour guides there, are unbelieveably happy and show the control some Mormon men have over some Mormon women.

If you haven't been there, Lake Powell on the Utah border is magnificent. You can rent a houseboat and spend days cruising the lake. We spent three days on the lake and water skiid, made a few bonfires, and had a great time. The houseboats can accomodate 10-12 people if I remember correctly and leave from Paige, Utah.
The only problem we had is the bathroom in one houseboat broke and that made for a rather messy and smelly day until it was fixed.

i work as a travel writer, and i've been visiting places where gay tolerance varies across regions to regions. Utah seems to be generally fine with gays.
word of caution though: just be a little more restrained in displaying affection in places of worshop. i guess i can understand why the mormons were freaking out. but generally, like what George, Sandra & Jo have mentioned, such mood-dampeners don't usually happen.
Couples may wish to take a quick browse through these guides available travel bookstore to get a brief idea of where and what to look out for when on a holiday.
cheers!
