Wonderfully warm and amzingly friendly B&B
What an amazing find. From the moment we arrived, Lizzie, David and the team were attentive. The rooms were big, well-appointed and wonderfully clean. We spent a wonderful afternoon, in unusual English sunshine, around the pool.

The B&B is well placed for Salisbury, a perfect town for sightseeing and Stonehenge. On the edge of the forest riding, walking and horse riding are all great fun (we tried to book horses for Saturday but everywhere was booked so plan early). For a longer weekend, a 40 min drive to Bournemouth is possible for those who like a beach (beware the Stag and Hen parties) but there are several Gay pubs in the Bournemouth area. Apparently there is a gay pub in Salisbury but we didn’t find it, there were too many other wonderful places to see.

Let’s talk gay things for a minute. We did just make Lizzie aware there we were two same sex couples (you never know with a B&B) and there was no problems what so ever. This establishment has a mixed clientele (of differing age groups) as well as being family run home so, as with everything in life, treat with the respect you expect to receive. We were warmly welcomed and I felt that I could be myself, much to the upset of my better half that would prefer me to act my age. Gay friendly is a poor phrase but one that is widely understood and would apply in bucketful’s for this B&B.

Breakfast is served at a sensible time 8 -9 (its 9 till 10 on a Sunday). The food was locally sourced (I think the eggs were from the chickens at the bottom of the garden) and our every request was not a problem (including the Diet Coke instead of coffee). There were some highlights which included Marmite for the toast and Chocolate Crispy Cakes made that day.

It’s the small touches that make a visit; during breakfast our beds were made and rooms tidied. I really loved that Lizzie put posed the weather on the chalkboard in the breakfast room. Do not be afraid to ask for recommendations and idea’s for things to see or do or places to eat. The team are forthcoming and show a great depth of knowledge for the area (my personal favourite The Hawk Conservancy Trust).

There are two very small points to be aware of; no credit cards so plan you’re cash payment for the last day (I’m a true Queen and never carry money). Secondly without a car there is a bit of a walk to the nearest village (speak to Lizzie as I’m sure transport can be worked out).

To sum up, if you’re a romantic like me, it’s perfect as a little get away. Just think Long walks in the forest hand in hand, local pubs for long weekend afternoons, just take someone with you or you’ll have to settle for Poppy the dog. For cycling and walking it’s a perfect base for activity weekends. Then for the sightseer you have all the best of English Stately homes and gardens. The Newton is a real English Bed and Breakfast for the 21st Century. Think about all the good things from a hotel and they would have been distilled into an amazingly warm and friendly house.
