Beautiful Setting, Warm Host, Great People
As my partner and I pulled up to the Rehoboth Guest House, my misgivings about staying at another Rehoboth Beach B&B began to melt away. Our previous stay involved a gorgeous facility with lukewarm staff and other guests we simply couldn’t relate to: conservative, much older than we, and not apparently gay-friendly. Our hopes for this most recent visit to a notoriously gay destination included pleasant facilities, attentive staff, and unambiguously queer or queer-positive fellow guests.

The Rehoboth Guest House proved a perfect choice.

Innkeeper Tom welcomed us warmly on the spacious porch, its rocking chairs swaying in the breeze coming off the ocean just a block and a half down the street. The blue and purple hydrangeas were in bloom and the clean-swept floors brought to mind a country home and welcoming arms. Our room was simple but certainly adequate, clean, and pleasantly decorated in light colors.

We spent the first few days of our vacation alone together among the people on the beach and boardwalk, though we socialized each morning at breakfast on the porch, quickly our favorite spot. As the week went on, we became more and more comfortable socializing.

The highlight of the Rehoboth Guest House is Tom’s knack for connecting his guests to one another. Tom graciously hosts a wine and cheese party for guests on Saturday afternoons in the beautiful back yard. On another spacious porch with rockers, Adirondack chairs, and tables, the guests gather, looking out at the grassy garden with flowers and trees, and the cedar showers off to the side, where guests can wash away the sand from the beach. Tom introduced all the guests to one another, making a point to inform us of some things we had in common—occupation, areas of interest, etc. We met many lovely gay and lesbian guests that Saturday—we happened to stay during a week when nearly all the guests were gay men, my partner and I being one of two lesbian couples there. There were also a few straight guests, though most of them stayed only one or two nights on their way elsewhere. Tom informed us that this was unusual; the guests are usually more mixed, though all are aware that the Rehoboth Guest House is gay-owned, gay-operated, and gay-friendly.

On Sunday, we met up with the other lesbian couple for a day on Poodle Beach, the mostly-gay section at the end of Rehoboth’s Boardwalk. Throughout the day we ran into men from the Guest House, who were quick with a friendly wave and a short conversation. That evening, a group of us met up on the porch, swapped tales of wipeouts in the waves, and made dinner plans. We shared coming out stories over burgers, heard a hilarious rendition of a Mary Chapin Carpenter song by one of our guests at karaoke, and finished up the evening at a gay bar. By the end of the night, we all talked about whether we might be able to coordinate coming back again at the same time next summer.

I look forward to staying in touch with the wonderful people we met at the Rehoboth Guest House, and hopefully taking another “class photo” on the front porch.
