Warm Host, Cold Tiles
Hotel Impala offers a quiet paradise against the busy, noisy streets of South Beach. Centrally located, it isn't directly on Ocean Avenue but a block away from all the fun. The entrance is easy to miss - located between (what is evidently) a really good restaurant and a building which, at the time, was going through reconstruction. You walk down a small path adorned with tropical plants, past a fountain, through french doors into a small lobby. It smelled of water and plant-life... an appealing smell, not the mildewy kind. The English hostess was very bubbly and friendly. The room itself: lot's of wood, "Impala" written everywhere, good shower gels and such, and a great tiled shower (though, the shower-head had a bit of mildew around it). I stayed with a friend, so we had two beds in the room... the beds were comfortable enough, but dubious was the possibility of a creepy crawly somewhere in the sheets or the room in general. Nonetheless, the cold tile floors and humid weather of South Beach seemed a perfect match... I definitely felt as though I were in some wonderful Latin country. Lot's of closet space, and with the exception of some noisy guests coming in at 2am and the construction that was somewhat audible from the building next store, it was A-OKAY! I'd recommend staying in a room that was NOT on the first floor if you were to stay here, just to avoid the guest noise. Other than that, the construction won't last forever and you couldn't hear the street at all. No view to speak of from our room - just bamboo and brick. I'd stay here again, but then again, I am one of those who'd come in at 2am and make said noise!
