Wonderful and relaxing location
The hotel Miramare e Castello is located in Ischia, a volcanic island off the Amalfi Coast, an hour boat ride from Naples, Italy. Although it is a five star hotel according to Italian standards, I would not personally rate it with more than 4 stars since neither the rooms nor the hotel in general are up to such high standard. Nevertheless, the hotel is in a beautiful location. It has its own private beach and while having breakfast you have a fantastic view of the Castle of Aragon island (a tiny fortress island with a medieval castle built on top of it). The hotel also has a small beauty farm with very good prices. Guests can also use the neighbouring hotel swimming facilities, which include an outdoor thermal water swimming pool. There is also a beauty farm there where I recommend you trying the "fangos" (mud). Very relaxing and fantastic for your skin.
The island in general is full of Germans and Russians with money that come to relax and take the waters, since they are extremely beneficial. There are also some streets with fantastic shops (Prada, Gucci and the like). Although accommodation in the island is expensive, dinning and going out is not. In fact, the food was amazingly good value for money. Wine and alcohol in general are ridiculously cheap (try to local liquor "Rucolino" made from Rocket leaves).
In terms of gay life, it is almost non-existent. You have to keep in mind that the island is small and mainly aimed at older people, but people are very tolerant and neither my boyfriend nor myself ever had any problems. In any case, there are a few discos and bars that I definitely recommend exploring (Italian guys are so good looking), but be warned, night life here starts after midnight!
The secret to hang out with gay people is to chat online with them before arriving to the island and then meet up. There is even a web site for gay people visiting Ischia, so just look for it.
Apart from Ischia Port, which is where most of the night life in the island is, I would also recommend visiting Sant Angelo (but get there with a taxi boat and not overland) just because it is so secluded as well as the village of Forio, where the locals that work at the hotels of the island live.
I also recommend renting a motorcicle, it is very cheap and will allow you to discover the most remote corners of the island at your own path.
