Service over Style
We’re avid readers of hotel review sites like Trip Advisor and Fodors.com, so our expectations for this hotel were based on other people’s reviews. We knew that it would be dated and in need of a renovation, but we didn’t know if it would retain that certain Four Seasons charm that makes a stay in almost any one of their properties memorable in the best way. We’re happy to report that it did, and we only wish we could have stayed longer. Why? One word: service. We enjoyed the bar with its intimate, relaxing spaces and the breakfast restaurant with its soaring windows. In both cases, we had the excellent service we’ve come to expect from the Four Seasons. And the food and drink were wonderful – the breakfast is definitely worth it.

The reviews were right about one thing: the hotel should be renovated. Hotel styles change and this hotel, which seems in some ways stuck in the 80s, should reflect that. Except for the bar, it lacks intimate spaces that make it feel more cozy, comfortable and exclusive and the relative (for a Four Seasons) plainness of its larger public spaces doesn’t convey the typical Four Seasons ambiance we’ve become accustomed to in our travels around the world.

We were upgraded to a Corner Deluxe Room with wonderful wraparound windows affording a view of the city and some of the mountains. The room had a comfortable bed and a nice layout, but the garish curtains and dated furniture were a drawback. We also thought the somewhat cramped bathroom was a bit dowdy; it was not as nice as the relaxing oases we’ve seen in other Four Seasons properties.

This is a fine hotel, in a city that seems to be changing overnight. Four Seasons is smart to have a property in Vancouver, now they just need one that reflects the dynamism and style of the city around it.
