Wonderful Stay
OK, so it's not a five star attraction. From the street, all you can see is the sign, which is almost bigger than the entrance itself.

The hotel is set back off the street, one of the major streets in this small village of Ubud, by about a US block (which makes for a quiet stay), and is reached by a long, narrow, but very well kept private promanade. This winds around and leads you to the left, where a wonderful pool, under blue skies, and beautiful gardens opens to the registration desk.

There are five or six separate buildings with rooms on two levels (about four to six rooms per building). Built about twenty years ago, the whole setting looks like it's been there for much longer. Visually, the gardens are terrific and well maintained, and are filled with traditional Balinese stone sculpture.

The rooms are basic clean and pleasant, with views to the temple next door with its rice field, the pool and gardens. Walking into your room your eye may be led to the bathroom towels on the bed, which are twisted and formed to resemble animal forms. Quite delightful.

As all Balinese are considered artists within their culture, great attention is paid to the small details.
And Ubud is the traditional center for all the arts produced and performed on the island. There are several museums in town best reached by driver, and the area is completely walkable, though very hot! So pack lots of shorts and sandels. Lots to see.

Artini II does provide a light breakfast each morning, and it is good for a start of the day. On my last visit in 2005, I paid $25.00 per day USD for a clean room with air conditioning, with ensuite bath, but as with everything in Bali, you have to negotiate your own rate. And of course, price dependant on exchange rates which are incredibly favorable, at this writing.

Since my stay was longer, I had a chance to interact a bit with the staff, and found all to be friendly and helpful. Most speak some English.

Ubud is about an hour north of the airport in Denpassar, so you have to hire a driver. About $10-20 USD. I would recommend this location for older travelers, younger travelers and single gay people. In Bali, there is no word for "gay" as it has been a part of the culture forever, though marriage to the opposite sex is encouraged greatly. It is a Hindu island. Very friendly and enjoyable. Most people stay in Ubud for just three or four days during their visit to the island, as it is a lower key location. (website)
